Description
Azami is a central figure in the narrative, known in legends as the Medusa. She is an immortal being who exists as the origin point for many of the story's supernatural elements. Her physical appearance is distinctive: she has very long, thick, curly black hair that is often tied in a high ponytail with a long red ribbon, and it can sometimes appear to move as if it were made of snakes. Her eyes are a striking crimson red with elliptical, snake-like pupils, and she has pale scales on her cheeks. She typically wears a white dress beneath a black and red-accented coat.
Azami's history is marked by profound loneliness and a search for identity. Born without any innate knowledge of herself or the world, she was initially driven by a strong curiosity. However, her existence led to a life of isolation, as humans who encountered her either worshipped her as a deity or, more often, persecuted her as a monster. This treatment caused her to develop a haughty demeanor and to view humans as dull creatures that die easily, a perspective rooted in her own immortality and immense power.
Her personality is complex and, despite her god-like power, she is described as sensitive. Her emotions are so potent that they can manifest as physical snakes, each one granting a unique eye ability. Her entire worldview changes when she meets a young soldier named Tsukihiko. He was the first human who did not fear her, and instead offered her kindness. They fell in love, married, and had a daughter named Shion. This experience taught Azami what it meant to love humans, but it also brought new fears. Realizing she would outlive her mortal family, her strongest wish shifted from understanding herself to finding a way to stay with them forever. This desire gave birth to the Snake of Clearing Eyes, which provided her with a solution: the creation of a new, never-ending world called the Kagerou Daze, where time does not pass.
Tragically, before she could take her family there, villagers attacked them, fearing her as a monster. In a moment of deep despair and self-hatred, Azami concluded that her very existence was a curse upon the people she loved. Believing that her family would be happier without her, she made the painful decision to enter the Kagerou Daze alone, leaving Tsukihiko and Shion behind in the real world.
Her motivations are driven by a desire for connection and a simultaneous fear of causing harm. After entering the Daze alone, she later witnessed the deaths of her daughter Shion and her granddaughter Marry at the hands of humans. Unable to bear the loss, she used her power to pull them into the Kagerou Daze to save them. To allow Marry to return to the real world, she gave her the Snake of Combining Eyes. This act had unintended consequences, as it caused Azami to lose control of the Kagerou Daze, which continued to follow her last command and swallow the souls of those who die on the same tragic date, August 15th.
Azami plays a foundational role in the story as the creator of the Kagerou Daze and the origin of the eye abilities. Her snakes, born from her emotions, are the source of the powers wielded by the main characters. Even after isolating herself, she continues to show a kind nature, particularly towards young people and children who end up in the Daze. For instance, she is notably kind and compassionate to a young Tsubomi Kido, even weeping upon hearing her story. This reveals that despite her decision to separate herself out of a sense of being a curse, the love she learned from her family continues to affect her personality.
Azami's abilities are vast and unparalleled. As the original Medusa, she possesses the Snake of Combining Eyes, which allowed her to use all the distinct eye abilities to a degree far greater than any human wielder and without suffering any of their drawbacks. Her powers include the ability to stop the movement of those who meet her gaze and to turn people to stone. Her snakes themselves are the embodiments of her emotions, and each one possesses a special ability. Her immortality and indestructibility make her a being of immense power, setting her apart from the fragile humans she both fears and loves.
