Description
Kaori Senoo is a second-year high school student at Tsuruga Academy, a school located in Nagano Prefecture. She holds the position of sergeant on the school's mahjong team, but her journey to that role is somewhat accidental; she originally joined the team simply to fulfill the requirement of having five players, allowing the school to enter the prefectural tournament.
In appearance, Kaori is characterized by her blonde hair, which she often wears in a side ponytail with a pink tie, and her blue eyes, which are framed by glasses. She is known for her cheerful and somewhat ditzy personality. She is a very shy and nervous girl who can be easily flustered, but she also has a trusting nature. Despite her seeming naivety and beginner status, she has moments of surprising perceptiveness, such as when she noticed that the main protagonist Saki Miyanaga was not at all intimidated during a particularly intense match. A key personal relationship is her friendship with Satomi Kanbara, whom she has known since childhood.
Her role in the story is that of an unexpected wildcard. At first glance, her lack of experience makes her seem like a weak link on the Tsuruga Academy team. However, her novice approach to mahjong becomes her greatest strength, as her thought process is unpredictable and impossible for seasoned players to read. Her primary and most notable ability is often referred to as beginner's luck. This extraordinary fortune allows her to win hands with improbable frequency and to achieve incredibly rare and high-scoring hands, known as yakuman. Over the course of the series, she has been shown to achieve three such yakuman, a feat said to be more than any other player.
Throughout the story, Kaori participates in several key tournaments, including the Nagano Prefectural Tournament and the subsequent individual tournament. She is also present during a combined training camp where she continues to baffle her opponents with her unorthodox play. Her character shows little change in skill level, as her power remains rooted in her lack of conventional technique. Instead, her development is more about being accepted and valued by her team for her unique contributions. Her teammates learn to rely on her strange power, and she gains confidence in her role, even though she remains a nervous player at heart.
