Description
Koromo Amae is a second-year student at Ryuumonbuchi High School and serves as the team’s ace player. Within the competitive world of high school mahjong, she is regarded as a national-class monster, a title earned through her extraordinary talent and her pivotal role in ending Kazekoshi Girls’ High School’s long winning streak the year before the main events of Saki – The Nationals. Orphaned at an early age, she was taken in by the Ryuumonbuchi family but raised in relative isolation, a circumstance that has deeply shaped her character.

Koromo displays a dual personality. On the surface, she is friendly, childlike, and eager to form friendships, often approaching others with warmth and a desire to be loved. This outward cheerfulness masks a deeper, more melancholic side: she frequently feels lonely and depressed, sometimes wandering aimlessly while lost in thought. Despite her small stature, she dislikes being treated like a child and craves genuine affection and acceptance.

Her motivations stem largely from this emotional void. She seeks connection and validation from those around her, yet on the mahjong table she exhibits a ruthless desire to crush her opponents’ pride, deriving satisfaction from overwhelming them. The game is both a source of solace and a stage where she can assert control.

Koromo’s key relationship is with her cousin, Touka Ryuumonbuchi. Although Touka was initially warned by her father to keep her distance, the two have developed a close, sibling-like bond, with Touka serving as Koromo’s primary caretaker and confidante. Another significant relationship is with Saki Miyanaga, the protagonist of the series. Their high-stakes match during the prefectural tournament forces Koromo to evolve. Relying until then almost entirely on her innate, almost supernatural intuition, Koromo learns to incorporate strategy and counterplay, moving beyond pure instinct and becoming a more versatile player.

This encounter marks the central arc of her development. Before facing Saki, Koromo’s playing was described as relying on an unshakeable “senses” that seemed to guarantee victory. The match humbles her and opens her to growth, allowing her to treat her instincts as one option rather than her only tool.

Koromo’s abilities are legendary. She is most famous for her mastery of the haitei raoyue, a winning move that uses the last tile from the wall. This power is linked to the moon, growing stronger as the moon becomes full. She can sense exactly when her opponents are one tile away from winning (tenpai) and even gauge the value of their hands, and she can apply pressure that prevents opponents from reaching tenpai altogether. This combination of perception and dominance slowly drives rivals into despair, cementing her reputation as a demon on the mahjong table.
