Description
Kurumi Kakura is a supporting character in Saki - The Nationals. She is a third-year student at Miyamori Girls' High School in Iwate Prefecture and a member of the school's mahjong team, where she typically plays as the middle guard in team matches. Physically, she is remarkably short, with a height of 130 centimeters, and has short brown hair and brown eyes. Her demeanor is often childlike and snarky; she teases teammates and opponents alike and generally behaves in a playful, youthful manner. At the same time, she can be sharply critical when provoked and possesses a confident, direct personality. One of her familiar habits is sitting on the lap of her teammate Shiromi Kosegawa, highlighting a warm and close bond with her. She also shows a protective concern for her teammates, such as when she welcomes Toyone Anetai back and scolds her for not considering the worry she caused. Her motivation is tied to her team’s ambition to compete at the national interhigh tournament, though no specific personal goal is singled out beyond that collective drive. As a mahjong player, her most distinctive ability is her consistent refusal to declare riichi. By never calling the signal that would reveal she is one tile away from a winning hand, she denies opponents the ability to judge whether she is in tenpai, making her play style stealthy and difficult to read. This tactic draws a comparison from an observer to the stealth riichi technique of Tsuruga Academy's Momoko Touyoko. Kurumi's role in the story is that of a minor opponent during the national tournament arc, and her character does not undergo significant change. She enriches the field of rival players with her blend of childish teasing, supportive camaraderie, and unorthodox approach to the game.
