TV-Series
Description
Inari Fushimi is the main protagonist of the series and a middle school student. Her name is a reference to Fushimi-Inari Station, and she was occasionally ridiculed during her childhood for sharing her name with the Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine. The story begins when she takes a shortcut to school and sees a fox pup about to fall into a river; despite being late, she jumps in and saves the animal, which turns out to be a fox spirit named Kon. The goddess of the Inari Shrine, Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami, is deeply grateful for this kindness. As a token of gratitude, the goddess fulfills one of Inari’s wishes, though this act of granting a wish inadvertently causes trouble. To compensate for this mistake, Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami bestows a small portion of her divine power upon Inari, giving her the ability to transform into anyone at will by uttering the phrase Inari, Konkon.
Inari is characterized as kind, clumsy, and incredibly shy, with an average or below-average intellect. Despite often getting into trouble, she remains optimistic and is very considerate of others, possessing a nature that makes it impossible for her to ignore someone who needs help. Her primary motivation at the beginning of the story is her long-time crush on Kouji Tanbabashi, a boy she admires for being cheerful and extremely hardworking. Her shyness, however, consistently prevents her from confessing her true feelings for him.
Her central role in the story involves navigating the adventures and challenges that arise from possessing a god’s power. As she uses her abilities, she attracts the interest of various otherworldly beings. Beyond simple shape-shifting, it is strongly hinted that she also unconsciously uses the divine power to make her hopes come true. Her key relationships include her bond with Kon, the fox spirit she saved, who becomes her loyal and supportive familiar often acting as her voice of reason; the goddess Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami, who grants her power; her older brother Touka Fushimi, who is sharp and spiritual and becomes aware of her powers; and her crush, Kouji Tanbabashi, to whom her secret is eventually revealed.
Throughout the narrative, Inari undergoes significant personal development. She begins to realize that her powers cannot always solve her problems and learns to accept herself for who she truly is. After a series of events, she returns the borrowed divine power to Uka but ends up developing her own abilities as a result. She then enters a training period for new gods to control her divine power while continuing to live as a human. In a culmination of her personal arc, she confesses her feelings to Kouji, who accepts them, and the two begin dating. By the end of the story, Inari remains human, has advanced to high school, and is still in a relationship with Kouji. Her notable ability is the power to transform into any human at will, though it is later revealed that her power is not limited to shape-shifting and includes a broader divine capability that she must learn to control.
