Description
Hajime Nishikawa is a first-year student at Yezo Agricultural High School, having enrolled with the goal of eventually taking over his family's potato farm, which spans fifty-six hectares of fields. His practical upbringing on a farm has given him a strong set of abilities; he is proficient with heavy machinery such as tractors, knows a great deal about different agricultural equipment, and has a working knowledge of cooking, particularly when it comes to preparing potatoes. This background also gives him a deep and useful knowledge of crops, allowing him to explain the properties of vegetables like asparagus or misshapen potatoes to his classmates.
Nishikawa is a calm, laid-back, and generally friendly individual, but he is also a dedicated otaku. His room is filled with a complete collection of figurines, posters, and other subculture merchandise, and he has a strong passion for anime, robots, and video games. His dream is to be accepted into a university in Tokyo, a city he reveres as the holy land for otaku. While normally easygoing, he becomes fiercely protective of his hobbies; any threat to his collection or an attempt to interfere with his computer or games is taken as a serious offense.
In his role at the school, he often serves as a sensible and helpful friend to the protagonist Yugo Hachiken, with whom he shares a dormitory room alongside Tarō Beppu. Nishikawa provides Hachiken with crucial farming advice for their various projects, such as their pizza party or a sled for the equestrian club, and also helps him with technology, once giving him an old laptop to use for his schoolwork and business proposals. His artistic sense and business acumen are notable as well; he can draw in an anime style and has made clever marketing suggestions, such as creating appealing labels for sausages to ensure they sell out or proposing that yogurt would sell better if it were made in the girl's bath rather than the boy's. His relationships extend beyond his roommates, and he has had memorable, often chaotic, interactions with the eccentric senior Shinei Ōkawa, whose careless actions have led to near-disasters involving fire and ruined belongings.
