Description
Hachi Shiou is a second-year student at Fujou High School and a member of the Game Creation Club (Provisional). He is the heir to the Shiou Group, a family business that manages multiple companies, which contributes to his wealthy background. Born on July 29, he stands 177cm tall and weighs 66kg, with brown or aubergine-colored hair and eyes, and has B blood type. His hobbies include reading, studying, and exercising, and he is noted to be capable at almost anything he attempts.
On the surface, Hachi appears to be the perfect gentleman. He is handsome, polite, respectful, and always smiling, which makes him incredibly popular with the female students at school. It is said that a single smile from him can steal any girl's heart. However, this charm is not effective on everyone. His primary motivation and driving force is his intense infatuation with his fellow club member, Roka Shibasaki. This fixation began during his first year of high school when he tried to take a bag Roka was carrying; in response, she put the bag over his head and attacked him with it. Rather than being deterred, Hachi interpreted this as a captivating experience and fell deeply in love with her, even keeping a tattered piece of the bag as a treasured memento. This event awakened a masochistic nature in him, and he is now aroused whenever Roka is mean to him or plays hard to get.
Hachi's role in the story is largely defined by this unrequited love. He sees the protagonist, Kenji Kazama, as his primary love rival because Roka shows a unique interest in Kenji and has also put a bag over Kenji's head. Upon learning this, Hachi concluded that the three of them form a love triangle and challenged Kenji to a game duel. This challenge escalated into a school-wide tournament, marking his major debut in the narrative. Despite his rivalry, Hachi does not harbor genuine malice toward Kenji. He often hangs out with Kenji and his group, known as the Kazama Party, and seems to consider him a friend as well as a rival.
Despite his high social standing and personal talents, Hachi is often the victim of neglect and mistreatment by the other girls in the club. They frequently imprison him in closets or behind furniture, and his reserved seat in the clubroom is on the bare floor in a corner behind a bookcase. At one point, he was forgotten for a while after being locked in a warehouse. This treatment, combined with his willingness to accept it, underscores his submissive and comically pathetic nature within the group dynamic. He is also a member of the Game Creation Club (Provisional), though his presence is sometimes overlooked. In the anime adaptation, his initial absence from school is explained as him taking lessons to prepare for his role as successor to the family business.
In terms of abilities, Hachi possesses surprisingly high specifications. Academically, he is very intelligent, having ranked fourth in his school year. Physically, he is able to effortlessly keep up with Roka, who is described as having excellent physical abilities, and can even overpower her in a pushing contest. In competitions, he has proven to be a formidable opponent, capable of competing with other strong characters in the series. His combination of wealth, good looks, intelligence, and athleticism makes him a character with immense potential, though his obsessive infatuation and masochistic tendencies often undermine his dignity.
