Description
Gaius Julius Caesar is a prominent character from the anime Nobunaga The Fool, serving as a key figure from the Western Planet. He is a member of the Roundtable of Kindred Souls, the organization that governs the Western Planet. A young man who often wears a mask, Caesar is notable for his striking appearance, which includes gray hair and blue eyes.
In terms of personality, Caesar is distinctly two-sided. He generally has a bright, charismatic, and outgoing demeanor. Most notably, he is an unabashed lover of women, to the extent that he will check to make sure there are no women in the enemy’s battle lines before engaging. However, this effervescent exterior completely transforms when he enters combat. In battle, he becomes a cold, calm, and ruthless man who does not hesitate to kill.
Caesar’s motivations are driven by a blend of ambition, rivalry, and personal desire. He is initially sent from the Western Planet on a mission to deal with the escaped Leonardo da Vinci. His interests shift dramatically when he scouts the Oda clan’s castle on the Eastern Star. Upon seeing Nobunaga’s sister, Ichihime, he becomes deeply infatuated and decides he must have her for himself. This desire becomes a primary motivation, leading him to orchestrate events to claim her as his queen. He also harbors a strong rivalry with Alexander, another powerful member of the Round Table, as both compete for greater influence and status under King Arthur.
In the story, Caesar plays the role of a major antagonist who eventually becomes a complex ally. He makes a brutal entry into the conflict on the Eastern Star by appearing on the battlefield during the Takeda clan’s assault on the Oda clan. In this encounter, he cold-bloodedly kills Nobuhide Oda, Nobunaga’s father. Later, he feigns alliance with the Takeda warlord Shingen, only to kill him with a surprise attack from behind and frame Nobunaga for the murder. Despite these dishonorable tactics, he claims a personal code against killing women. He eventually proposes a truce and a temporary alliance with Nobunaga, his central condition being that Ichihime will become his queen. Ichihime voluntarily accepts this arrangement, leading to their marriage.
Caesar’s key relationships define his arc. His obsession with Ichihime is his most defining personal connection, and he genuinely seems to find happiness with her. His relationship with Nobunaga Oda is a tense and pragmatic alliance of convenience, transforming from enmity to a partnership against common enemies like King Arthur. His rivalry with Alexander drives his political ambitions, while his service to King Arthur ultimately places him in danger.
Caesar’s development sees him shift from a self-serving agent of the Western Planet to a more sympathetic figure. By choosing Ichihime over his loyalty to King Arthur, he seals his own fate. His story concludes tragically. After choosing to side with his wife and brother-in-law, he is betrayed by his subordinates, Nell and Bianchi, who act on the orders of Cesare Borgia. Pierced by a spear, Caesar kills Bianchi in retaliation before dying in Ichihime’s arms, professing that his happiest moments were spent with her.
Regarding his abilities, Caesar is a skilled warrior and strategist. He pilots a powerful Giant War Armor named Quo Vadis. He is proficient in combat, capable of killing skilled fighters like Nobuhide and Shingen Takeda, though he is not above using underhanded tactics such as surprise attacks from behind to secure victory.
