Description
Honoka Takamiya is the male protagonist of Witch Craft Works, a high school student whose life undergoes a dramatic transformation when he discovers the hidden magical world around him. He is a second-year student and serves as the student council president at Tougetsu Academy. Physically, Honoka has a slender build and is noticeably shorter than most of his male classmates, with short brown hair, brownish-yellow eyes, and pale skin.

Before the events of the story, Honoka lived what he considered a very ordinary and boring life. He had no friends, preferred to be left alone, and was often described as solitary or somewhat antisocial. He sat next to Ayaka Kagari, the school's revered "Princess," but any minor interaction between them would result in him being bullied by her unofficial fan club. Unbeknownst to him, this mundane existence was carefully orchestrated, as Ayaka had been secretly protecting him from a group known as the Tower Witches.

Honoka's personality is defined by a strong sense of justice and a kindhearted nature. Despite knowing he is powerless compared to the witches around him, he consistently tries to protect others, including Ayaka and strangers he sees being bullied. This righteous trait stems from his own experiences with being bullied, and it is a primary reason he asks Ayaka to become her apprentice and teach him magic. He is also shown to be somewhat naive and earnest, taking things seriously and worrying about the safety of those around him, often without regard for his own well-being.

The central motivation for most of the other characters is to protect Honoka because of a mysterious entity sealed within him known as the White Princess Evermillion. The Tower Witches constantly target him in attempts to capture or release this power. Once he learns the truth, Honoka is determined to stop being a passive burden. He asks Ayaka to teach him magic so he can defend himself and support her, rather than letting her take all the risks and injuries on his behalf.

Honoka's most significant relationship is with Ayaka Kagari. Due to a powerful spell linked to Evermillion, any damage Honoka suffers is transferred directly to Ayaka's body, a phenomenon known as damage transfer. This connection also allows Ayaka to draw upon the vast magical power sealed inside Honoka. As the story progresses, it is revealed that their fates have been intertwined since childhood. Their mothers arranged for them to be together, and Honoka himself made a contract with Evermillion to save Ayaka's life, which resulted in him becoming the vessel for the White Princess and his memories of the event being erased. He develops a deep, protective care for Ayaka and is hinted to have romantic feelings for her, which she eventually reciprocates.

Other key relationships include his younger sister, Kasumi Takamiya, who is very close to him and jealous of the time Ayaka spends with her brother. As a Studio Witch, Kasumi is also tasked with protecting Honoka when he is at home. He also has a connection to Kazane Kagari, the head of the Workshop Witches and Ayaka's mother, who he traveled with as a disciple during his lost childhood.

Honoka's development is closely tied to the five seals that contain Evermillion within him. Initially, he is presented as physically weak, with poor grades, no stamina, and no talent for anything. However, as the seals are broken, it is revealed that they were suppressing his natural abilities. Consequently, his physical capabilities, academic performance, and magical power all increase dramatically. He shows a natural aptitude for magic, learning to fly on a broom, and his vast magical reserves are sufficient to repair entire sections of a city damaged by witch battles. Mentally, he grows from a passive victim of circumstance into a more active participant who is determined to protect his loved ones, though he maintains his core, righteous personality.

Notable abilities that Honoka possesses include his role as the vessel for Evermillion, granting him immense latent magical power. Through his contract with Ayaka, he is the source of her inexhaustible strength, and his own magical control improves as he trains. Later developments show him capable of summoning familiars and using his power in more direct ways, such as switching places with Ayaka. His hobby, distinct from his magical life, is sculpting, and he has a notable fondness for penguins, which is reflected in his personal items and even his familiar.
