Description
Date Masamune, often called the One-Eyed Dragon, is a powerful and ambitious feudal lord who serves as a significant antagonist in Brave10. He is the commander controlling the region of Oushu and is known for his long white hair, brown eyes, and an eyepatch covering one eye, giving him a distinctive and commanding appearance.
Masamune possesses a bold and impulsive personality, marching to the beat of his own drum and rarely listening to the advice of his own vassals. He is boldly arrogant, believing himself to be superior to those around him, and is not afraid to lash out with insults like idiots or imbeciles at both his enemies and allies. Despite his brash nature, he is also very clever and an independent thinker, capable of hatching intricate plots to turn the tide of a situation in his favor. He enjoys showing off and is quite flamboyant, wearing elaborate clothing and carrying himself with absolute confidence in his swordsmanship.
His primary motivation is a desire to throw the world into chaos and turmoil, as he believes such an unstable environment can be conquered through battle. He is deeply invested in obtaining the power of the Kushimitama, a mystical force said to be capable of quelling the chaos of the world. Initially interested in the power itself, Masamune kidnaps the shrine maiden Isanami in an attempt to harness her abilities for his own ends. Realizing that the true treasure is not just the power but Isanami herself, he shifts his goal to claiming her for himself to further his ambitions of conquest. He desires a new society ruled by numbers and material wealth, and he places great value on his own wits, personal power, and survival.
In the story, Masamune acts as a direct rival to the protagonist, Yukimura Sanada. He challenges Yukimura to a duel at a formal gathering, disregarding a ban on weapons to test his strength. This rivalry is fueled by their contrasting beliefs and Masamune's resentment after Yukimura outsmarts him and reclaims Isanami. Despite their antagonism, Masamune holds a certain respect for Yukimura and greatly appreciates his strength and cleverness. His key relationships include with his most loyal and long-suffering retainer, Kojuro Katakura, who often has to drag the wayward Masamune back to his duties. Kojuro serves as his living shadow, and Masamune is visibly shocked by any danger that threatens to take him away. He also shares a bond with the mercenary Magoichi, as both believe firearms are the weapons of the future and share a love for money.
While Masamune does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation within the main narrative of Brave10, his role as a major obstacle pushes the story forward. His constant scheming and direct actions, such as kidnapping Isanami, force the formation and unity of the ten Braves serving Yukimura. He serves as a consistent threat, demonstrating his skills as a legendary swordsman and his mastery of strategy, which makes him a formidable foe for the protagonists.
