Description
Jūzō Kakei is a samurai in service to the lord Yukimura Sanada and is one of the ten warriors who fight under him. He is designated as the Brave of Metal, a title that reflects his connection to firearms and his precise, unyielding nature.
A middle-aged man with black hair tied back, brown eyes, and a distinguishing scar on his right cheek, Kakei maintains a consistently serious and diligent demeanor. He is an extremely stiff and conservative individual, believing strongly in propriety and often finding the behavior of others to be inappropriate. He is notably weak around women and becomes visibly uncomfortable, annoyed, or jealous when the young woman Isanami acts too familiar or close with his comrade, the ninja Saizō, feeling such behavior would only be acceptable if the two were married. Despite his strict exterior, he demonstrates a capacity for respect, such as when he commends Isanami for her courage after witnessing her plea to spare an enemy's life.
Kakei's primary motivation is his unwavering loyalty to Yukimura Sanada. He serves as an information gatherer, traveling the land to collect intelligence under his master's orders. In his role, he is often dispatched on missions to investigate enemy activity. During the story, he is tasked with guiding Isanami and Saizō to the Izumo shrine, a journey where his protective instincts and combat skills come to the forefront. His key relationships are defined by his service to Yukimura and his interactions with his fellow warriors. He is a friend to Jinpachi Nezu and shares a notable dynamic with Saizō and Isanami, often acting as an exasperated but reliable guardian.
Throughout his journey, Kakei shows subtle development. Initially rigid in his judgments, he begins to revise his opinions of others as he witnesses their actions and growth. He also confronts his significant personal limitation: a pronounced fear of heights. Despite his acrophobia, he overcomes his terror to ascend a cliff in a critical effort to rescue Isanami, demonstrating that his dedication to protecting others surpasses his own fears.
Kakei's most notable ability is his unparalleled mastery of the matchlock gun. He is a supremely accurate marksman who, by his own reputation, never misses a shot. His primary weapon, a customized rapid-firing matchlock, is treated with great care and affection, and he has given it the name Saya. He relies heavily on this firearm during missions, using his sharpshooting skills to eliminate multiple enemies in rapid succession. This reliance on his gun is so profound that he becomes visibly distressed when the weapon is accidentally damaged, prompting him to depart on a specific journey to have it repaired. His combat style is thus defined by long-range precision and technical expertise with firearms, which sets him apart from the more close-quarters or ninja-based fighters in the group.
