Description
Izanami is the female protagonist of the story. She is a sixteen-year-old shrine maiden who was found as an abandoned infant beneath the torii gate of the Izumo Grand Shrine and raised by the head priest. Her name and background are a direct reference to the Shinto creator goddess Izanami-no-Mikoto, which foreshadows her true nature.

In terms of personality, Izanami is initially presented as a very naive and optimistic young woman. Having spent her entire life sheltered within the shrine, she knows very little about the outside world and the realities of war. This inexperience often makes her a liability in dangerous situations, as she requires constant protection, and she is frequently described as clumsy and a big eater, with a particular fondness for soba noodles and sweets. Despite her lack of combat skill, she possesses a big heart and a strong sense of compassion; she is even willing to forgive an enemy who has harmed her, demonstrating a remarkable capacity for mercy. As the story progresses, she matures, growing determined to become stronger so that she is no longer a burden to those around her.

Izanami’s primary motivation stems from the destruction of her home. After the Izumo Shrine is attacked and everyone she knows is killed, she narrowly escapes and seeks safety. Feeling the guidance of a divine will, she resolves to travel to Ueda Castle to seek the protection of the warlord Sanada Yukimura. Her initial goal is purely survival, but this evolves as she becomes integrated into Yukimura's group and begins to learn the truth about her own existence.

Within the story, Izanami serves as the central figure around which much of the conflict revolves. She is not just a helpless survivor but a living vessel for a powerful entity. Her role is critical because of the hidden power she possesses, making her a target for multiple factions who wish to exploit that power. Ultimately, she becomes one of the ten warriors (the Brave 10) who gather around Sanada Yukimura.

The most significant relationship in her life is with the Iga ninja Kirigakure Saizo. When he saves her from her pursuers, she develops an immediate and intense attachment to him, often clinging to him and showing jealousy when he interacts with others. She trusts him implicitly and relies on him for both physical protection and emotional support. Another key relationship is her brief but impactful friendship with Anastasia, which helps her confront her feelings of uselessness and inspires her desire to grow stronger. She also becomes a close companion to other members of Sanada's group, including Sarutobi Sasuke.

Izanami undergoes significant development, transitioning from a passive, sheltered girl into a more self-aware individual. Early on, her power is entirely reactive and unconscious. She is frequently frustrated by her own weakness, but a conversation with Anastasia forces her to realize that her strength lies in her heart and her desire to protect others. This realization marks a turning point where she actively wishes to become useful, rather than simply being an object to be protected.

Her notable abilities are intrinsically linked to the secret of her birth. In times of extreme danger, she can unconsciously summon a dark, spherical force to shield herself. This power emanates from a sacred hairpin she wears, which contains a divine spirit called Kushimitama. The true secret, however, is that Izanami is the reincarnation or vessel for the邪神, the evil god Izanami, who is associated with slaughter and darkness. The Kushimitama in her hairpin does not grant her power; its true purpose is to suppress her own devastating divine power in order to protect the world from her. She represents the power of darkness, one of the ten根源 (origin) forces. When she finally discards the hairpin, she awakens as the goddess Izanami, trapping herself in darkness until she is rescued by Saizo, who represents the power of light.
