Description
Hattori Hanzō is a prominent antagonist in Brave 10, serving as a major obstacle for the protagonist, Kirigakure Saizo. He is a highly skilled Iga ninja who was ordered by his master to capture the Izumo priestess Isanami, a mission he undertakes with ruthless efficiency. He is also the one responsible for burning down the Izumo shrine, an act of destruction that sets the story's events in motion.
In terms of background, Hanzō is officially a spy for the powerful warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu. However, his true allegiance is to himself. He holds no genuine loyalty to Tokugawa and secretly plots to seize control of the land from the shadows, using his position for personal gain. His primary motivation is to obtain the Kushi-mitama, a powerful artifact that Isanami possesses, intending to wield its great power to further his own ambitions.
Hanzō’s personality is defined by cruelty, sadism, and an immense self-confidence in his own abilities. He is heartless and takes pleasure in psychological torment, particularly teasing Isanami about her perceived weakness and blaming her for the suffering and death of her friends. He is also driven by a deep-seated envy of Saizo's renown as a ninja. This jealousy fuels a personal rivalry, and he frequently boasts to Saizo that his own skills are superior, a claim that is not entirely without truth.
His role in the story is that of a primary instigator and field commander for the opposing forces. He leads his own group of powerful warriors, known as the Iga League of Five, to directly attack Saizo and the other Braves assembled by Sanada Yukimura. Hanzō is the mastermind who sends Ana to infiltrate Yukimura's group as a spy, revealing his manipulative nature and strategic cunning. He directly confronts Saizo on multiple occasions, seeking to capture Isanami and eliminate his rival.
Key relationships central to his character include his antagonistic link to Saizo, which is based on both professional rivalry and personal jealousy. He also has a manipulative connection with Ana, whom he uses as an infiltrator. His relationship with his nominal master, Tokugawa Ieyasu, is a facade, as he is actively working to betray him for his own ends. Throughout the story, Hanzō shows little to no character development, remaining a consistently cruel and confident villain whose only goal is power.
As a ninja, Hanzō’s most notable ability is his incredible speed, which he uses as his primary method of attack. He is so proficient that he might even boast more talent as a ninja than Saizo, a fact he is all too eager to remind his rival of. His physical appearance is distinctive, typically characterized by a long braid, a half-mask covering part of his face, and earrings. His red eyes and long brown hair add to his menacing and memorable visual design.
