Description
Rachel Alucard is a central figure in BlazBlue Alter Memory, presented as the head of the noble Alucard vampire family and one of the most powerful beings in the story. She is the daughter of Clavis Alucard, the late head of the clan, and has lived for centuries, though her body appears to be that of a young girl. She resides in Alucard Castle, from which she watches over the world, accompanied by her devoted butler Valkenhayn R. Hellsing and her two familiars, the black cat Nago and the red bat Gii. As a member of the Alucard bloodline, she belongs to a prestigious family with deep ties to the world's history.
Her personality blends refined aristocratic grace with a sharp, condescending edge. Rachel is intelligent, cultured, and dignified, but she often looks down on others with boredom, snobbery, and apathy, expecting the highest standards of formality from those around her. She is easily irritated by being bored and dislikes being addressed informally; the nickname rabbit, a reference to the ribbons in her hair, annoys her, although Ragna is one of the few people who can call her names without facing serious consequences. Beneath this haughty exterior, she genuinely cares for her allies and is far more compassionate than she lets on. She also harbors a deep distaste for her own vampiric instincts and urges.
Rachel's main motivation is tied to her role as an observer of the world. She is among the few characters aware that time has been repeating in a loop since the Calamity Trigger a century earlier, and much of her action is aimed at guiding other characters toward breaking that cycle. Because of her position as an Onlooker, she could not directly intervene and had to work from the sidelines, secretly steering events and pushing people forward so they would not repeat the same mistakes. Her desire to end the loop and her hatred of boredom drive her to leave her castle and involve herself in the affairs of others. In Alter Memory, she plays a major role in the unfolding events surrounding Ragna and the conflict with the Imperator of the Novus Orbis Librarium.
Among her key relationships, the most significant is with Ragna the Bloodedge. Rachel watches over him closely, and it is implied that she accidentally turned him into a half-vampire, which granted him his powers, his heterochromia, and his healing ability. Although she would never admit it, she loves Ragna for his determination and refusal to give up, and she shows concern for him that she extends to no one else. Valkenhayn R. Hellsing, her butler and guardian, is fervently loyal to her and served the Alucard family for generations; he was a loyal friend and respected rival to her late father. Her familiars Nago and Gii endure rough treatment from her but remain devoted companions who assist her in both daily life and battle.
Over the course of the story, Rachel develops from a detached observer confined to the fringes of events into a more active participant in shaping the fate of the world. Her growing attachment to Ragna and her willingness to involve herself directly reflect this change, and her actions are instrumental in pushing the other characters toward a future that breaks the cycle of repetition. In later material she is described as a former Onlooker, signaling a shift away from her previous passive role.
In terms of abilities, Rachel is exceptionally powerful, with sorcery, mastery over lightning and wind, and vampire traits such as regenerating from most wounds and the ability to turn humans into vampires. She can create a pocket dimension known as the Requiem, which intersects with her dream world, and she commands the Tsukuyomi Unit, one of the Sankishin, which provides an absolute defense manifested as a golden shield capable of blocking devastating attacks such as the blast from the Nox Nyctores Take-Mikazuchi. Her familiars serve as versatile tools in combat, and her overall power is such that she can keep pace with foes as dangerous as Terumi, placing her among the strongest characters in the setting.
