Description
Makoto Nanaya is a squirrel-type beastkin, or demi-human, who serves as a supporting character in BlazBlue Alter Memory. She was born in the 11th Hierarchical City of Shinatsu and attended the Military Academy alongside Tsubaki Yayoi, Carl Clover, Noel Vermillion, and Jin Kisaragi, where she became particularly close friends with Noel and Tsubaki. As a beastkin, she experienced bullying early in her academy life because of her race, but her friendship with Noel and Tsubaki helped end that, and she remains proud of her heritage despite occasional personal insecurities. Her personality is marked by high energy, hyperactivity, and a short attention span, yet she often proves to be clever and resourceful when the situation demands it. She is outgoing, adventurous, and deeply loyal to her friends, with a strong sense of justice that drives her to protect those she cares about.
Makoto holds the rank of Second Lieutenant within the Novus Orbis Librarium and works for its Intelligence Department alongside Hazama, but her true allegiance lies with the anti-NOL organization Sector Seven, for whom she acts as a spy. Her motivations stem from a desire to fight discrimination and to support her friends, particularly Noel. As the story progresses, she becomes instrumental in the coup d’état orchestrated by Kagura Mutsuki to install Homura Amanohokosaka as ruler, and after discovering the truth behind the NOL’s darker schemes, she defects from the organization, leaving with Noel and Iron Tager to continue the fight.
In terms of abilities, Makoto possesses inhuman reflexes and exceptional physical strength, capable of striking with enough force to create impact craters. She fights in a close-range, rush-down style using tonfa weapons and her own powerful punches, often incorporating her large, curly squirrel tail into her combat maneuvers. Her Drive ability, called Impact, allows her to charge her attacks up to three stages for increased damage, though timing is critical. Her raw power is such that her Astral Heat attack involves punching an opponent into the sky, leaving an imprint of her fist on the moon before it splits apart. Throughout the series, she remains a steadfast ally, using her strength and wits to support Noel and oppose the forces threatening the world.
