Description
Natsume Tsuchimikado is the heir to the main branch of the Tsuchimikado clan, one of the most prestigious families of onmyouji in the world of Tokyo Ravens. She is a teenage girl with long black hair and red eyes, known for her elegant appearance. From a young age, she was raised under strict expectations and a tradition that requires the heir to present as male in front of other onmyouji families, a practice intended to conceal the true identity of Yakou Tsuchimikado's reincarnation. This upbringing made her disciplined and serious, but also left her shy in personal interactions and uncertain in everyday social situations. She is deeply loyal to her family's reputation and carries the heavy burden of her role as the next head of the clan.
Her personality is marked by a strong sense of duty, intelligence, and a fierce protective instinct toward those she cares about, especially Harutora Tsuchimikado, her childhood friend. She is often stoic and composed, but she can be hot-tempered and easily flustered, particularly when Harutora's oblivious nature frustrates her. Despite her composed exterior, she is emotionally vulnerable and secretly holds deep affection for Harutora, a feeling that has persisted since childhood. Her jealousy and shyness about her feelings sometimes surface in comedic ways, but her dedication to protecting him is genuine and resolute.
Motivationally, Natsume is driven by the need to uphold her family's legacy and to protect Harutora from the dangers surrounding the Tsuchimikado name. She initially seeks to fulfill the promise Harutora made long ago to become her familiar, drawing him back into the world of onmyoudo. As the story progresses, her motivations shift from simply fulfilling duty to actively safeguarding Harutora, even at great personal cost. She is willing to take drastic actions, such as allowing herself to be used as the replacement heir to keep Harutora safe.
Her role in the story is that of a deuteragonist who serves as both a catalyst for Harutora's return to the supernatural world and a central figure in the larger conflict involving Yakou Tsuchimikado's legacy. She is assumed by many to be Yakou's reincarnation, a misconception that drives much of the plot's tension. Her presence at the Onmyo Academy and her interactions with other characters like Suzuka Dairenji and Kyouko Kurahashi create key conflicts and alliances.
Key relationships include her bond with Harutora, which is the emotional heart of her character arc. Her love for him is unspoken yet evident in her actions, and she trusts him more than anyone. She also has a complicated relationship with her own creation, Hokuto, a powerful familiar she created to stay close to Harutora. Hokuto's existence reflects Natsume's inner desires and her willingness to sacrifice her own spiritual energy to maintain that connection. Her relationship with her family, particularly the expectations of her father and the legacy of her grandfather, weighs heavily on her sense of self.
Her development over the series involves learning to balance her inherited responsibilities with her personal desires. She starts as someone who strictly adheres to her role and hides her true self, but she gradually embraces her identity and learns to fight not just for her family's name but for the people she loves. A pivotal turning point is her willingness to be replaced as the heir and, later, her experience of being killed and revived, which fundamentally changes her place in the clan and her perspective on her own life.
In terms of abilities, Natsume is one of the most skilled onmyouji at the Onmyo Academy. Her prowess in onmyoudo is such that she can rival professional exorcists despite her young age. Her skills include spiritual manipulation, talisman creation, the summoning and control of shikigami, and powerful defensive and offensive spellcasting. Her most notable ability is her connection to Hokuto, a dragon-class familiar created by her own spiritual power. Maintaining Hokuto places a significant strain on her, but it also makes her a formidable combatant. She is also knowledgeable in forbidden rituals, including the Taizan Fukun ritual, a technique that can revive the dead. Her abilities evolve as she confronts her fears and deepens her understanding of her family's legacy, allowing her to grow beyond her initial role as the protected heir.
