Description
Naoyuki Zaizen is a student at Kokushikan High School and a member of its baseball team, where he serves as a pinch hitter. Originally a baseball prodigy during his middle school years, he was widely expected to become both the team's ace pitcher and cleanup hitter. In that earlier period, he played as a pitcher and formed a battery with catcher Chris, becoming his rival. His fastball was so formidable that even talented hitters like Jun Isashiki and Tetsuya Yuki could not make contact with it. However, after entering high school, Zaizen sustained a leg injury that kept him from playing in official games for a considerable time. As a result, he transitioned to the role of pinch hitter for Kokushikan. Despite this setback, his teammates hold him in high regard and respect his abilities and leadership.

Zaizen carries a personality that can appear irritable, lazy, and even devilish, but beneath that exterior he is a sharp analyst who can quickly identify an opponent's weaknesses and exploit them without hesitation. He enjoys a challenge and is not one to back down from competition. Off the field, he is known to spend his free time reading manga, listening to music, or napping. His teammates trust him, and he is considered a good person despite his aggressive demeanor.

His primary motivation stems from a deep love for the game and a strong desire to compete at a high level. He also harbors a quiet wish that he could have continued playing alongside Chris, his former catcher, on the same team. Their paths diverged when Chris enrolled at Seidou High School, but they reunited on the field during a practice game in their first year of high school. Zaizen’s rivalry with Chris remains a significant part of his story, driving him to prove himself.

In terms of ability, Zaizen is a technically sound hitter with keen batting instincts, making him an effective pinch hitter. His past as a pitcher gives him a deep understanding of the pitcher‑batter matchup, and he uses this knowledge to his advantage at the plate. His analytic mindset and strategic thinking are among his strongest assets on the field. Developmentally, Zaizen’s character arc is centered on adapting to his injury and redefining his role on the team, moving from a star pitcher to a dependable pinch hitter while maintaining his competitive edge.
