Description
Kazusa Touma is a central figure in White Album 2, known as a reclusive piano prodigy whose life becomes intertwined with two classmates, leading to a complex and painful love triangle. She is a student at Houjou University附属High School (or a similarly named institution in some adaptations), where she sits next to the protagonist, Haruki Kitahara.
Kazusa is the only daughter of Youko Touma, a world-renowned pianist. Her mother’s decision to move to Europe, leaving Kazusa behind in Japan, is a defining factor in her childhood and contributes to her deep-seated feelings of abandonment. Living alone in a large house, she grows up wealthy but isolated. Initially part of the school’s prestigious music curriculum due to her exceptional talent, her chronic absences, poor grades, and defiant attitude lead to her being transferred to the general curriculum for her third year. This move further alienates her from her peers.
In terms of personality, Kazusa presents a cold, distant, and often abrasive exterior. She is frequently described as an ice queen, using sharp words like "idiot" and "get out" to keep others at a distance. She is a loner who spends most of her school day sleeping in class and her afternoons alone in the music room, where she finds solace in playing the grand piano. However, this icy demeanor is a protective shell. Underneath, Kazusa is a deeply caring, emotionally vulnerable, and lonely young woman. She is inherently shy and struggles immensely with expressing her true feelings, especially her growing affection for Haruki. This difficulty in communication, combined with her fear of being hurt, leads her to hide her emotions behind a mask of indifference. She has a noted sweet tooth, enjoying desserts like pudding, but has a strong aversion to spicy, bitter, or sour foods. Her personality is often classified as tsundere, as she gradually warms up to the people who manage to break through her defenses.
Kazusa’s primary motivation is initially self-preservation and a retreat into her music, the one area where she feels competent and in control. Her life changes when she discovers that the clumsy guitarist practicing next door, whom she nicknames “Guitar-kun,” is Haruki. She had been secretly accompanying his guitar playing from the shadows of the adjacent music room, finding comfort in his persistent, if unskilled, efforts. Her motivation shifts when Haruki discovers her identity and, alongside the popular singer Setsuna Ogiso, persuades her to join the Light Music Club for the school festival. For Kazusa, this represents a desperate and unspoken desire to connect with the boy she has secretly loved since he first began pestering her with school forms. Her actions are largely driven by her hidden love for Haruki, who she credits with giving her life direction again, and a simultaneous sense of guilt and loyalty toward Setsuna, her first real friend.
Her role in the story is that of the catalyst and the tragic other woman. As the band’s pianist and musical anchor, she is essential to their success. More importantly, her unspoken feelings for Haruki and his for her create a silent, intense emotional current that runs beneath the trio’s friendship. The narrative’s central conflict arises when Setsuna confesses to Haruki first, leading him to accept, and Kazusa is forced to suppress her own love to avoid destroying the fragile bond between the three. She accepts an opportunity to study piano in Europe to escape the painful situation.
The key relationships in her life are few but intensely deep. Her relationship with Haruki Kitahara is the core of her character arc. She is initially annoyed by his persistent but kind-hearted attempts to reach her, but she gradually falls in love with him, viewing him as the only person who saw past her cold exterior. Their bond is expressed most purely through their musical duets. Her relationship with Setsuna Ogiso is equally critical, defined by a contradiction: she acknowledges that Setsuna could be her “closest friend or her greatest enemy”. Setsuna is the first person to actively befriend her, and Kazusa cherishes this, but their friendship is forever strained by their mutual love for Haruki. This leads Kazusa to sacrifice her own happiness to preserve Setsuna’s, an act that ultimately leads to three years of suffering for all of them. Her relationship with her mother, Youko, is cold and resentful, defined by abandonment, though her mother remains a distant figure who provides for her financially and eventually facilitates her escape to Europe.
Kazusa undergoes significant development. She starts as a solitary, emotionally stunted girl who actively pushes the world away. Through her forced collaboration with Haruki and Setsuna, she begins to thaw, experiencing friendship, camaraderie, and the joy of performing together. However, the romantic conflict drives her to retreat again, culminating in her departure for Vienna without a proper goodbye. In later story arcs, she returns as a more mature and successful international pianist, but she is still haunted by the unresolved feelings of her past. She becomes more determined and less passive, willing to confront the feelings she once ran from, leading to a final, dramatic confrontation where she must choose between her love for Haruki and her sense of right and wrong.
Her most notable ability is her prodigious, genius-level talent for music, particularly the piano. She is portrayed as being able to play multiple instruments, including guitar, bass, and saxophone, at a professional level. Her piano playing is not just technically perfect but deeply emotive, serving as the primary means of expressing her inner turmoil and love when words fail her. She also has a hidden ability for intense focus and dedication, practicing the piano for ten hours a day or learning the guitar specifically to impress Haruki. Beyond music, she has no notable practical life skills, as she cannot cook or even style her own long hair, remaining a "black long straight" hairstyle throughout the story.
