Laura was initially introduced as an antagonist, driven by a deep resentment toward Ichika Orimura. She had idolized his sister, Chifuyu Orimura, who served as her mentor during her time training with the German military, but when Chifuyu withdrew from a major tournament to rescue her kidnapped brother, Laura blamed Ichika and believed that Chifuyu's forfeiture was a stain on her otherwise flawless record. Laura's personality was originally cold, distant, and antisocial, a direct result of her upbringing in a purely military environment that lacked normal emotional development or social interaction. She possessed a strong superiority complex, viewing most people around her as inferior and dismissing their abilities as second-rate, and she was blunt and confrontational in her interactions. Her defining motivation was the pursuit of strength, and she initially equated strength with combat prowess and flawless military performance. After being defeated by Ichika in battle twice, even while she was using her enhanced Valkyrie Trace System, Laura was forced to reconsider her understanding of what real strength meant. During a conversation with Ichika, he told her that true strength meant being able to do what one wants to do and to help those around them, which caused her to reflect on her own values. This experience triggered a significant transformation in her character: her personality softened, her hostility faded, and she began to show a more vulnerable, endearing, and straightforward side. She developed a deep affection for Ichika, which she expressed openly and without hesitation, famously declaring him to be her bride due to a misunderstanding of Japanese cultural norms. Laura's key relationships are defined by her reverence for Chifuyu Orimura, whom she views as the ideal soldier and mentor, and her evolving bond with Ichika, which moves from bitter rivalry to devoted protectiveness and romantic attachment. She also has complex relationships with the other female IS cadets, often oscillating between rivalry and camaraderie. A distinctive part of her background involves a failed military experiment in which a prototype artificial eye was implanted in her left eye to enhance her IS piloting compatibility; the procedure was only partially successful, and the resulting sensory overload hindered her performance, leading to her being viewed as defective before Chifuyu's intervention restored her confidence.
