Description
Garius En Cordbal is a character from the Holy Eldant Empire, serving as a high-ranking minister and the captain of the Empress's guard. He is an elf with a tall stature, recorded at 180 centimeters, and is known for his handsome features, including long white hair and green eyes. As a member of the royal family, he is the cousin of the young Empress Petralka Anne Eldant III and is technically a prince and successor to the throne, being the grandson of the previous emperor.
His background is marked by a severe political conflict, as his parents and Petralka's parents were rivals who fought for the throne, ultimately leading to their mutual deaths. This tragedy left Petralka to become ruler while still a child, and Garius yielded the throne to her, choosing to stand by her side as a protector and regent rather than a challenger.
Garius is characterized by a calm, confident, and highly charismatic demeanor, making him a natural leader whom many trust. He is exceptionally resourceful and rational, capable of analyzing complex situations, such as initially suspecting that Japan's cultural outreach might be a form of invasion. A key aspect of his personality is his ability to admit when he is wrong; despite his initial skepticism toward otaku culture, he is open to changing his perspective when presented with convincing arguments.
Within the story, Garius holds immense political and military power, effectively acting as the supreme commander of the empire's armed forces. He is primarily responsible for diplomacy and military affairs, working alongside Lord Chancellor Saishou Zakhar to govern the empire. One of his practical contributions is issuing the special magic rings used by the protagonist, Shinichi Kanou, and his companions. His role as a close supporter of Empress Petralka is complicated by their families' violent history, and he carries a deep, unspoken sense of guilt towards her.
Garius undergoes a notable development in his views on otaku culture. Initially dismissive, he begins to accept it after witnessing Shinichi defend the half-elf Myucel Foaran, an event that also involves him observing Petralka's behavior towards her. Over time, he becomes a genuine enthusiast, particularly developing a strong interest in reading Boys' Love books, a genre he comes to share with the character Minori Koganuma.
His key relationships further define him. His bond with Petralka is both political and personal, as he serves as her stable support and views her as a precious younger sibling who needs protection. He shares a mutual interest in BL with Minori Koganuma. He also demonstrates sharp perception by immediately recognizing that the androgynous character Kouryuu Ayasaki is male when others are fooled.
He develops a special interest in the protagonist Shinichi Kanou, which is portrayed as an attraction. He blushes at the suggestion of a romantic pairing with Shinichi and even follows the Empress in eating rice off Shinichi's face. While he indicates he does not "bat for both teams," the narrative consistently presents him as being attracted to men. The story later reveals a deeper reason for this, connecting his sexuality to a past relationship with Prince Rubert of the Cherverick Kingdom.
