Description
Ira Gamagōri is a prominent character known for his immense size, strict adherence to rules, and unwavering loyalty. He serves as the head of the Honnōji Academy Disciplinary Committee and is one of the four Elite Four members who directly support the student council president.

Physically, Gamagōri is a large and muscular young man with a darker complexion and short, bleached blonde hair styled back. He has noticeably thick eyebrows and wears small gold earrings in his enlarged earlobes. A distinctive visual trait is his constantly fluctuating size; he is often portrayed as a giant who towers over everyone else, with his height appearing to change based on the intensity of his emotions.

Gamagōri's personality is defined by his absolute seriousness and intolerance for foolishness or rule-breaking. He frequently shouts at the top of his lungs when opposed and is quick to berate his more casual colleagues for failing to adhere to his rigid standards. He holds the laws of the academy, ethical behavior, the school hierarchy, and above all else, Satsuki Kiryūin, in the highest regard. As the disciplinary chair, he is feared for his harsh punishments, which can include killing serious lawbreakers and displaying their corpses as an example. However, he also operates with a clear sense of honor and protects innocent students, once offering Ryūko Matoi and Mako Mankanshoku a ride when their scooter broke down. A surprising facet of his personality is his blatant masochism; during battles, he openly enjoys the pain inflicted upon him while wearing his uniform, often making stereotypical declarations like "I've been a bad boy!".

Gamagōri's backstory explains the foundation of his loyalty. As a junior high school student council president with a strong sense of justice, he confronted a group of delinquents who were being protected by their influential parents. After he failed to prevent a bullying victim from leaping off a roof, Satsuki Kiryūin, then a freshman, saved the boy and dismantled the bullies' support systems by buying out their parents' companies and exposing corruption. Witnessing this, Gamagōri vowed to fight against what he saw as her tyranny. He tested his strength against her, wearing steel armor under his uniform, but she still managed to pierce his defenses. Even in defeat, he refused to kneel, using the scabbard of her sword to prop himself up. Impressed by his resolve, Satsuki recruited him, telling him to wait two years for her to build a school that would become her army. He agreed, delaying his own schooling to enroll with her at Honnōji Academy.

His primary motivation is to serve as Satsuki Kiryūin's "impenetrable shield," a role he embraces with absolute devotion. He is outwardly the most loyal of the Elite Four, acting as her right-hand man and enforcer to maintain the oppressive order she has established at the academy. His role in the story is to act as a major antagonist in the first half, enforcing Satsuki's will and testing Ryūko's strength. He is tasked with capturing Ryūko and retrieving Senketsu, leading to a direct confrontation. Beyond his duty, his actions are also driven by a deep-seated personal code of honor and a belief in justice.

Key relationships define his journey. His bond with Satsuki is paramount; he is willing to sacrifice himself for her and felt such shame after his defeat by Ryūko that he attempted seppuku, only to be stopped by Satsuki, who told him to "wipe away his own tears." He also has a notable and evolving relationship with Mako Mankanshoku. Initially, he is an intimidating authority figure, but he eventually becomes fond of her energetic and unconventional spirit. He is often seen interacting with her positively, cheering her on, and becoming protective of her, such as when he risks himself to save her during a battle and later develops a close bond with her family.

Throughout the series, Gamagōri undergoes development. After his defeat, he loses his Three-Star status and joins Ryūko and Mako in the spectator stands, acting as a commentator. He later receives upgraded versions of his uniform to fight against new threats. Over time, his strict, rule-bound exterior softens, revealing a more compassionate side, particularly in his interactions with Mako, as he shifts from a straightforward antagonist to a key ally in the final battle against a greater foe.

Gamagōri possesses superhuman strength, even without his uniform, allowing him to overpower multiple uniform users and grapple with large monsters barehanded. His primary power comes from his Three-Star Goku Uniform, called the Shackle Regalia. This uniform is unique because its outer armor is made of an ultra-tough cloth, not Life Fibers, making it immune to attacks that drain Life Fiber energy. Its special ability is to absorb damage from enemy attacks, increasing his size and strength proportionally. He can even use a technique called Self-Flagellation, striking himself with his own whips to power up if the enemy refuses to attack. Once enough damage is absorbed, he can transform into the Scourge Regalia, a more powerful form that allows him to unleash explosive area-of-effect attacks and multiple spiked whips with devastating reach. Later in the series, he receives upgraded versions of his uniform, including the Shackle Regalia Mk.II and the ultimate Persona Unleashed form, which grants him even greater physical prowess, flame-coated fists, and the powerful Unrestrained Ego Blast attack.
