Description
Aoi Fukasaku is a member of the Medic Unit, a special team deployed into the irradiated ruins of a former capital. She is a first-year high school student and a close friend of her teammates, Ibara Naruse and Taeko Nomura. Her physical appearance includes short cadet blue hair and steel-blue eyes, and she typically wears her school uniform along with a gym bag she carries everywhere. She has a habit of referring to herself in the third person and describing herself as young and beautiful.

On the surface, Aoi possesses a cheerful, kind, and innocent personality. She is portrayed as a happy-go-lucky individual who is a good listener and willing to hear about other people's problems. She has a notably large appetite and a particular fondness for sweets, and among her unit, she is often the one carrying most of their provisions. Despite her friendly and excited nature when things go well, Aoi is also very impressionable and easily panics when confronted with difficult or dangerous situations. In such moments, she tends to become whiny, frequently complains about being tired, and often calls out for help, usually to her senior, Ibara. Her childlike demeanor can sometimes lead to carelessness, and she has expressed a desire to escape from the harsh realities of her mission, even requesting to return home. This escapist tendency is a trait she developed during her school days, where she would retreat into a fantasy world by reading manga and watching anime. She is also known to speak in a Kansai dialect.

A crucial aspect of Aoi's character is the hidden power she possesses, which is directly tied to her psychological state. While she initially appears to have no superhuman abilities, it is later revealed that she wields special, overwhelming powers related to psychic phenomena such as levitation and psychokinesis. However, she is not consciously aware of how to use these abilities. When pushed into a corner, Aoi can enter an awakened state where a dissociative alternate personality named Izanami Jyugotenshi takes control of her body. Izanami is a persona Aoi unconsciously created during her school days, inspired by a heroic character from an anime she liked, as a way to cope with being bullied by the Ozu sisters. In this awakened state, Aoi's powers are unleashed without restraint, allowing her to perform feats such as creating powerful shockwaves, generating force fields that can block and absorb energy attacks, stopping bullets, and even destroying aircraft. Despite being opposites in personality, Aoi and Izanami generally share the same desires, so Izanami accomplishes what Aoi wishes to do but cannot. When Aoi exits this awakened state, she is left physically exhausted due to her low stamina and has no memory of the events that occurred while Izanami was in control.

Aoi's motivations and development are heavily influenced by her key relationships. Her most significant bond is with Ibara Naruse, who once protected her from bullies during their school days. This event made Aoi greatly look up to Ibara, who considers Aoi like a younger sister and always tries to protect her. Aoi's desire to protect Ibara in return becomes a powerful motivator for her to gain control over her abilities. She shares a close friendship with her classmate Taeko Nomura, with whom she often talks and has a strong emotional bond. Aoi was also a target of bullying by the Ozu sisters, Kanon and Shion, an experience that left her deeply traumatized. She also forms a connection with the robot No-sense, caring for him deeply and even standing up to an adversary to protect him. Another pivotal relationship is with Mana Tsuburaya, a character with similar powers with whom Aoi resonates. Mana trains Aoi over the course of a single night, teaching her the basic techniques of Flare, Levitation, and Psychokinesis. The key to unlocking her power, Mana explains, is to think of the person she wants to protect, which for Aoi is Ibara.

Throughout the story, Aoi undergoes significant development. Initially plagued by low confidence and a sense of being a burden to her team, she eventually begins to confront her inner demons. In the manga, she receives training that allows her to use her abilities without needing to enter her awakened state and lose control to Izanami. While her powers in this conscious state are less destructive than Izanami's and can only be sustained for a shorter duration due to her stamina, she still becomes impressively powerful. Her journey is one of self-discovery and learning that her vulnerability does not equate to weakness, as she resolves to stand by her teammates as a valuable member of the Coppelion unit.
