Description
Haruto Kurosawa is a central character in the anime Coppelion, serving as the leader of the Coppelion Cleaning Unit. He is 18 years old and a third-year high school student, a classmate and close friend of the protagonist, Ibara Naruse. As a Coppelion, Haruto is a clone, and his genetic template is Dr. Coppelius himself, the scientist responsible for creating the Coppelions. This makes Haruto the first successful Coppelion, designated by the production code C-1, and he bears a striking resemblance to a young Dr. Coppelius.

In terms of personality, Haruto is serious, highly intelligent, and remarkably pragmatic. He possesses a tactical mind and often proceeds with calculated plans. Unlike some of his comrades, he does not shy away from lethal force, viewing himself and other Coppelions as being akin to disposable puppets, a belief that allows him to act with cold efficiency when the situation demands it. Despite this hardened exterior, he demonstrates a deep and genuine care for his teammate Ibara, with hints of romantic feelings that develop over the course of the story.

Haruto's role in the narrative is multi-faceted. He acts as the field commander and tactical expert for the clean-up crew, making strategic decisions and utilizing his extensive knowledge of military science and physics. His personal history is deeply intertwined with Ibara's, having first met her when they were five years old, an encounter where he famously carried an injured Ibara to safety, begging her to continue living. This shared childhood forms the bedrock of their bond, and he often serves as her protector and an anchor to her humanity. His motivations are largely driven by his loyalty to those he considers close, particularly Ibara, and a gradual shift away from his initial cynical view of their mission.

One of Haruto's most notable abilities is his unique power of super regeneration, effectively granting him the ability to resurrect from fatal injuries. Kanon Ozu has stated that there is no way Haruto could truly die, and even if he did, he would simply revive, though the process can take days and he still experiences the full pain of his wounds. This ability also extends to his blood, which contains healing properties that can be used to aid others. Beyond his regenerative capabilities, Haruto is a weapons and ordinance expert, highly skilled with a wide variety of firearms and explosives. He is also a gadgeteer genius, constantly inventing new bombs, tracking devices, and even a customized wristwatch to remotely control his Armored Modular Vehicle.

Key relationships define Haruto's character. His bond with Ibara Naruse is the most significant, evolving from childhood friendship into a deep, mutual care that borders on romance. He shows a soft spot for her, and she is often the one who softens his pragmatic and sometimes ruthless worldview. His relationship with the Ozu sisters, Kanon and Shion, is that of a somewhat annoyed but reliable leader, as they often act unpredictably, though they are all members of the same team. As a clone of Dr. Coppelius, his very existence is tied to the series' central antagonist, creating a complex dynamic of origin vs. individual identity. Throughout the story, Haruto undergoes notable development, moving from a soldier who resents having to rescue ordinary humans to someone who learns to value life more deeply through his interactions with Ibara, culminating in a willingness to perform heroic sacrifices for the greater good.
