Description
Kaname Osaki is a young man from the anime Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East. He has dark blonde hair that is styled to sweep around his head and slanted brown eyes. He is often seen wearing bright, formal clothing and is identified as a member of one of the four Kemonotsuki Houses, meaning he is possessed by the Five Foxes, a powerful group of spirits. His birthday is December 7th.
His background is marked by hardship from an early age. Born as the son of a concubine, Kaname was once targeted by the legal wife of the Osaki family. However, after the furious Five Foxes placed a curse on the family to protect him, the entire household began to treat him nicely out of fear. He was also a sickly child with very picky eating habits. This changed when he was taken in by the Church and went with Rio Satomi to the mountains for a month of training. During this time, he was scared and could not understand how Rio could sleep so deeply, and he hardly ate. Given the choice between eating rabbits or wild pigs, he ended up crying every time until a traumatic experience involving being offered bugs caused him to stop being a picky eater and, as a result, he stopped catching colds.
In terms of personality, Kaname is known for being playful, powerful, and confident. He enjoys teasing his friend Rio Satomi at every opportunity, indicating a relaxed and friendly dynamic with him. Despite his initially intimidating introduction as the master of talking foxes who kidnaps Hamaji, he is ultimately revealed to be a nice person who forms a strong alliance with the main group. His demeanor suggests a balance of mischief and genuine care for those close to him.
Kaname's primary role in the story is as an ally to the main characters. He is associated with the Church and leads the Five Foxes. Initially, he appears to be an antagonist when his foxes kidnap Hamaji, but the situation quickly resolves as he becomes a friend and collaborator. He and his group decide to stay in the city, where the main characters also reside, and he supports their mission to gather the eight warriors who carry the mystical beads.
His key relationships are with Rio Satomi and Hamaji. He considers Rio a friend and confidant, often engaging in playful teasing with him. His relationship with Hamaji is more complex, as he appears to have romantic feelings for her. He did not disagree when his foxes referred to Hamaji as his future bride, and his affection was clearly demonstrated when he became extremely angry after Seiran's insect pets wounded her face. Their dynamic has been described as having Beauty and the Beast chemistry, where the seemingly captive young woman remains unperturbed and gives her captor a hard time.
Regarding his development, the most notable change in Kaname occurred during his childhood training with Rio, which transformed him from a sickly, picky eater into a much hardier individual. As the series progresses, he demonstrates a willingness to protect his friends and use his power to fight against common enemies. He is considered a very powerful and strong character, whose abilities are linked to the five foxes that possess him.
Notable abilities stem from his bond with the Five Foxes. As a member of a Kemonotsuki House, these spirits are a core part of his identity and power, allowing him to perform feats that ordinary humans cannot. This connection to the foxes is a defining aspect of his character and his role within the story's world.
