Description
Principal Yanagi is the head of Senkawa High School in the anime H2 and a firm opponent of high school baseball. Under his policy, Senkawa has no official baseball team, even though a small unofficial baseball fan club exists among the students. He repeatedly rejects the fan club's requests to be recognized as a proper club, and this resistance is the main barrier that the central characters must overcome early in the story. He is also the father of Morimichi Yanagi, a naturally gifted second baseman, and the two are bound by a promise that Morimichi will not play baseball in high school, a commitment connected to the principal's dislike of the sport at that level.
His personality comes across as cautious, firm, and somewhat skeptical, but not entirely closed-minded. Instead of refusing any possibility outright, he sets a demanding condition: if a group of Senkawa students can defeat the powerful Meiwa Daiichi team in a practice game, he will approve the creation of an official baseball club. In that closely contested match, Senkawa loses by a narrow margin under questionable officiating, but the players' effort and sincerity move the principal, and he eventually grants approval for the team. This decision is a turning point in the story, because it allows the baseball club to begin its path toward the national tournament.
The principal's relationship with his son is an important part of his character. His negative feelings toward high school baseball have kept Morimichi from following his talent and passion for the game. After the principal's old resentment is resolved, Morimichi is finally able to confess his love of baseball, and his father accepts his wish to join the team. Morimichi then plays second base and becomes an important member of the Senkawa lineup, while the bond between father and son is repaired through the sport that once divided them.
He also influences the team's formation beyond granting permission. After overhearing Fujio Koga, the brother of team manager Haruka Koga, loudly and knowledgeably discussing a Koshien game in a coffee shop, the principal takes a liking to him and later appoints Fujio as the team's coach. His relationships with the students who campaign for the team, particularly Hiro Kunimi, Atsushi Noda, and Haruka Koga, shift from opposition to support as he witnesses their seriousness and dedication.
Over the course of the story, he develops from a stubborn opponent of high school baseball into an approving figure within the school, allowing the sport to take root and prosper. The team he helped bring into existence goes on to reach the national Koshien tournament and achieve significant success. His authority over club approval makes him an essential gatekeeper in the narrative, and his decision-making reflects a practical, observant side, visible in the condition he imposes and in his choice of coach. His notable abilities are not athletic but administrative and evaluative, centered on judging people and situations and on using his institutional authority to shape the school's direction.
