TV-Series
Description
Dantalion is a central figure in the Devil and Realist narrative, introduced as a powerful demon of high rank. His formal title is the Grand Duke of Hell, where he commands the 36 armies of the infernal realm and holds the position of the 71st pillar among the 72 Demons of the Goetia. Within the demonic social hierarchy, he is a candidate to succeed the throne, having been nominated for this position by the leader of the half-breed demon faction, Astaroth. To move freely in the human world and stay close to the story's protagonist, he assumes the school identity of a student named Dantalion Huber.
In terms of personality, Dantalion presents a compelling duality that defines much of his interaction with others. On the surface, he typically exhibits a gentle, affectionate, and flamboyant demeanor. He is often seen as charming, generous, and strikingly handsome, carrying himself with the elegance of a wealthy aristocrat when in his school uniform. He is a capable athlete and has a particular fondness for meat-based dishes, especially the cooking prepared by his loyal black sheep butler, Baphomet. However, this civilized exterior masks a far more dangerous nature. When a situation calls for combat or when his protective instincts are triggered, he sheds his warmth to reveal a genuinely cruel and bloodthirsty warrior. This darker aspect of his personality is rooted in a brutal past; before becoming a demon, he annihilated an entire tribe along with their territory.
The primary engine for Dantalions actions throughout the series is his complex and profound loyalty, which connects two individuals across time. Originally, he was a human who made a contract with the demon lord Lucifer, becoming the only being ever to do so and transforming into a demon in the process. His most defining bond, however, is with the ancient King Solomon, who commanded the 72 pillars. Unlike the other demons who served Solomon out of duty or magical compulsion, Dantalions devotion was personal and romantic; he is the sole demon whom Solomon is said to have ever kissed, and he remains the only one capable of removing Solomons ring without permission. This loyalty ended in tragedy when Solomon commanded Dantalion to kill him. In the present day, he transfers this intense devotion to Williams soul, who is Solomons descendant and the Elector with the power to choose Hells interim ruler. This relationship is the core of his role in the story. His initial declaration upon being summoned is to announce himself as the one who will be chosen as the next ruler of Hell, but his motivations quickly become more personal. While he seeks the throne, he refuses to simply manipulate the Elector to gain it; instead, he swears to protect William from all threats. He financially supports Williams education by paying his tuition and enrolls in the same school to remain a constant guardian, blending a political quest with a genuine and heartfelt need to stay close to the reincarnation of his lost master.
As the narrative progresses, Dantalions character development is tied to the pain of his history with Solomon. A significant source of anguish is that Solomon was later resurrected but had forgotten Dantalion entirely, a rejection that deeply wounds the demon. Over time, Williams inherent nature and growing trust gradually begin to heal this rift. The pragmatic human realist slowly shows affection and care for Dantalion, leading the demon to shed some of his hidden sorrow and express his wish not just to rule, but simply to remain by Williams side eternally.
Regarding his abilities, Dantalion is considered exceptionally powerful, with some sources suggesting his might could even surpass that of the Four Kings of Hell. His power is a direct legacy of his unique origin as the only contractor of Lucifer. He is consistently accompanied by two bat-like familiars named Amon and Mamon, and he holds the epithet He who plays the flute. His status as a high-ranking Great Duke allows him to command vast legions, and he is more than capable of confronting and defeating numerous other demonic challengers who seek the throne of the demon world.
