Description
Nana Komatsu, also known by the nickname Hachi, is one of the two central characters in the anime and manga series NANA. Born on November 30, 1980, she stands 158 centimeters tall and is the middle daughter among three sisters in a warm and cheerful household. She moves to Tokyo at the age of twenty, driven by a desire to pursue her dreams, though her ambitions are primarily romantic rather than professional.
Her personality is marked by cheerfulness, naivety, and a childlike outlook. She is affectionate, loyal, and deeply dependent on others for emotional support, often clinging to people who show her kindness. She is also impulsive and easily swept up in the excitement and drama of her surroundings. These traits earn her the nickname Hachi, a reference to both the Japanese word for eight (the number two after the other Nana, whose name means seven) and the legendary loyal dog Hachiko, underscoring her devoted and dependent nature.
Hachi’s primary motivation is to find romantic love and build a stable, happy family. She longs to be a good wife and mother, and she frequently prioritizes the needs and dreams of the people she loves over her own. Her search for love often leads her into emotionally turbulent relationships, but she remains optimistic and hopeful.
In the story, she serves as a counterpoint to the other main protagonist, Nana Osaki. While Osaki embodies fierce independence and professional ambition, Komatsu represents the pursuit of romance and domestic security. Their unlikely friendship becomes the emotional backbone of the series, and Komatsu’s choices frequently drive the plot forward, especially her romantic entanglements.
Her most significant relationship is with Nana Osaki, her roommate and closest friend. Despite their starkly different personalities, the two share a deep and transformative bond. Her romantic life is dominated by two men: Nobuo Terashima, the gentle and idealistic guitarist of the band Blast, whom she genuinely loves, and Takumi Ichinose, the charismatic but controlling bassist of the rival band Trapnest. After discovering she is pregnant, she marries Takumi, believing he can provide a stable future for their child, even though her heart is torn. This decision forces her to mature quickly and navigate the complexities of marriage and motherhood.
Over the course of the series, Hachi undergoes significant personal growth. She begins as a dependent, somewhat childish young woman who defines herself through her relationships. Through the pain of heartbreak, the responsibility of pregnancy, and the demands of marriage, she learns to make difficult sacrifices and develops a stronger sense of self. She becomes more resilient emotionally, though she still struggles with her deep-seated need for external validation.
She has no supernatural skills, but her talents include cooking, which she consciously improves upon to express love for her husband. Her greatest strength is her emotional resilience and her capacity for empathy, which allow her to navigate the many upheavals in her life and remain a nurturing presence for those around her.
