TV-Series
Description
Nana Osaki is one of the two central protagonists of the series NANA. She was born on March 5, 1981, in Meguro, Tokyo, and stands 162 centimeters tall with a slender build. Her early life was marked by abandonment: her parents left her, and she was raised by her grandmother, Miyuki Osaki, who later passed away. During high school, Nana was expelled after being falsely accused of prostitution, an event that deepened her distrust of others and hardened her exterior. Despite these hardships, she developed a fierce determination to succeed as a musician.

Nana is the lead vocalist of the underground punk band Black Stones, often shortened to Blast. Her personality is a blend of toughness and vulnerability. She presents a sarcastic, blunt attitude and a dry sense of humor, often calling herself a sadist in jest, but underneath she is deeply kind and loyal to those she cares about. She is independent and self-reliant, yet she struggles with a fear of abandonment that fuels emotional volatility. Her motivations are driven by her dream of becoming a famous singer and by her desire to protect and connect with the people she loves. She moves to Tokyo to pursue her music career, leaving behind a past that includes a painful breakup with her first love and former bandmate, Ren Honjo.

Within the story, Nana serves as a counterpart and anchor to her roommate, Nana Komatsu, nicknamed Hachi. Their friendship forms the emotional core of the series, with Nana taking on a protective yet sometimes emotionally guarded role. Her key relationships include Ren Honjo, the guitarist for the rival band Trapnest, who was once a member of Black Stones and later becomes her fiancé; their relationship is passionate but strained by jealousy, distance, and Ren’s substance abuse. Another significant bond is with Yasu, the drummer of Black Stones and a close confidant, for whom she harbors ambiguous feelings. She is also fiercely loyal to her bandmates, Shin and Nobu, treating them like family.

Over the course of the series, Nana undergoes considerable development. Initially closed off and self-reliant, she gradually learns to lean on her friends, particularly Hachi, though her emotional growth is marked by setbacks. She develops panic attacks triggered by stressful situations, which require her to breathe into a bag to regulate her breathing. Her journey involves balancing her ambition with her personal relationships, and she faces the consequences of fame, betrayal, and loss. Notably, after Ren’s death, she disappears, and later chapters imply she has fled to England, leaving her ultimate fate unresolved due to the manga’s hiatus.

In terms of abilities, Nana possesses a powerful, husky singing voice and a magnetic stage presence that commands attention. She is a capable guitarist and songwriter, and her performances are emotionally charged. Outside of music, she can cook, though her tendency to oversalt her dishes is a running trait that only Ren seems to genuinely enjoy. She has no supernatural powers; her strengths are her vocal talent, charisma, and fierce loyalty, while her weaknesses include her difficulty expressing emotions and her tendency toward self-destruction.
