Movie
Description
The Nine Tails, also known as Kurama, is one of the nine tailed beasts created by the Sage of the Six Paths. In the events leading up to the film, it was sealed within the newborn Naruto Uzumaki by his parents, Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki, to protect the Hidden Leaf Village from its destructive power. Its background as a creature feared and sought after as a tool for war shapes its wary and hostile disposition toward humans, a trait that carries over into the events of Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie.
In the film, the Nine Tails serves as the primary target of the antagonist Tobi, who manipulates the alternate reality known as the Limited Tsukuyomi in order to extract the beast from Naruto without triggering a full-scale war. Tobi's ultimate goal is to seize the Nine Tails and use its immense power for his own ends. The Nine Tails is aware of this threat and acts as a cautious, if reluctant, ally to Naruto. Its primary motivation throughout the story is self-preservation and the protection of its own existence, though this leads it to cooperate with its jinchuriki when necessary.
The Nine Tails plays a crucial role in the climax of the film. When Naruto faces the alternate version of himself, Menma, who has absorbed defeated masked beasts to manifest a dark counterpart known as the Black Nine Tails, the Nine Tails makes a temporary truce with Naruto. It warns Naruto not to look into Menma's Sharingan, as Tobi plans to extract the Nine Tails from him in the same way it was extracted from Kushina years earlier. The Nine Tails allows Naruto to fully unleash its power to fight the Black Nine Tails, marking a rare moment of cooperation between the beast and its host. This alliance is instrumental in the battle, though it ultimately leaves the Nine Tails weakened and vulnerable to Tobi's extraction attempt.
The relationship between the Nine Tails and Naruto is one of mutual necessity rather than trust. The Nine Tails does not display the same level of development or emotional bond seen later in the main series; in this film, its cooperation is driven entirely by circumstance. It shares a brief but significant connection with Naruto's mother, Kushina, who was its previous jinchuriki, and it recognizes the danger posed by Tobi's manipulation of Menma.
The Nine Tails possesses immense physical strength, vast reserves of chakra, and the ability to regenerate. It can manifest its full form as a gigantic fox with nine tails, capable of causing massive destruction. In the film, it is also able to sense the presence of its dark counterpart and reacts instinctively to its emergence. When fully unleashed, the Nine Tails can combat other colossal entities, as demonstrated in its battle against the Black Nine Tails. Its power is both a source of fear and a vital asset in the fight against Tobi and Menma.
Throughout Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie, the Nine Tails does not undergo any major character development. It remains a largely static figure, defined by its role as a powerful, dangerous force that must be controlled or captured. Its brief alliance with Naruto represents a temporary shift in their dynamic, but it does not fundamentally alter its nature or its distrust of humans within the confines of this story.
