Description
Ai Mikaze is a fictional character from the anime Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love 2000%. He is a member of the idol group QUARTET NIGHT, which also includes Reiji Kotobuki, Ranmaru Kurosaki, and Camus. Despite being the youngest member of the group at fifteen years old, he is already an active and highly professional idol. He also serves as a senior student at Saotome Academy, where he is assigned to mentor the junior idols Syo Kurusu and Natsuki Shinomiya in their Master Course.
Ai’s background is defined by his artificial nature. He is not a human but an android, specifically a singing robot, created by a professor who modeled him after his nephew, a former idol named Aine Kisaragi. The purpose of his creation was to test whether an artificial being could become a popular idol. Due to budget constraints during his development, Ai was not equipped with the capacity to truly understand or feel emotions. He operates by receiving signals from a supercomputer, and he requires regular maintenance instead of normal human activities like sleeping or eating. He has demonstrated superhuman strength, such as lifting heavy objects with ease, and possesses waterproofing capabilities, though he has an unexplained aversion to the ocean.
In terms of personality, Ai is consistently calm, analytical, and logical. He rarely shows strong emotion and often approaches social situations by calculating probabilities or searching his database for appropriate responses. He explicitly states that he lacks emotions, which leads him to observe and document human behavior meticulously in an attempt to understand it. This can make him seem blunt, cold, or even harsh, particularly in his role as a teacher. He adheres to a strict philosophy: if students have potential, he will raise them; if they do not, he will drop them. This approach has caused previous trainees to quit after only a month. Despite his detached exterior, he has a hidden, more innocent side and is known to be deeply responsible. A notable quirk is that he overheats if he tries to overanalyze the concept of love.
Ai’s primary motivation is not born from personal dreams or aspirations; he became an idol simply because it was expected of him. His initial lack of personal goals and emotional depth was reflected in his work. While his singing voice is highly praised as an angelic and technically perfect, his early performances lacked the emotional resonance that comes from personal vulnerability and feeling, which was considered a weakness. His central role in the story is therefore tied to his development, where his interactions with his students and fellow idols become a way for him to learn about human emotions. His role as a mentor to Syo and Natsuki, as well as his dynamic with Haruka Nanami, is crucial in this process, as the professor who created him hoped these individuals would help teach him what love and feelings are.
His key relationships are significant to this development. Within QUARTET NIGHT, he often acts as a mediator during arguments between the hot-tempered Ranmaru and the prideful Camus. He maintains a professional, if not initially distant, relationship with his bandmates, whom he views more as acquaintances than friends. With his students, he is strict and demanding, but over time, he becomes more genuinely invested in their growth and well-being. He is known for calling everyone by their first names, a sign of his detached and data-driven approach to social interactions.
Over the course of the series, Ai undergoes subtle but meaningful development. He begins as an entity who merely observes and mimics behavior but gradually forms genuine bonds with the people around him. He learns to become more invested in his role as a teacher and a group member, moving from a state of pure logic to one where he begins to experience the faintest stirrings of emotion. He views himself as incomplete and inexperienced, like a child who can absorb information but needs time to deeply understand it, and his journey is one of self-discovery as he explores the meaning of his own existence and the nature of love.
Notable abilities, aside from his superhuman physical traits, include his exceptional musical talent. By the age of fourteen, he was already a professional arranger and composer. He is a skilled performer whose vocal control is considered flawless, and his instrument of choice is the synthesizer. Outside of music, he has a hobby of customizing computers and enjoys online gaming, often exchanging information about games with his fellow idol Ren Jinguji.
