Description
Aki Muroto is one of the heroines of the anime Photo Kano and serves as the student council president at Kouga Academy. She is a third-year student in class 3-A, making her a senior to the protagonist. Her birthday is January 19th, and her blood type is A.
Aki is renowned throughout the school for her strict and principled personality, often perceived as picky or demanding because she is always conscious of rules and order. She dislikes anything that disrupts the school's order or breaks its regulations. As a result, she takes her responsibilities as student council president with the utmost seriousness. Her perfectionism extends to her academic life, where she consistently achieves the highest grades in her year. Aki comes from a family of doctors, and this family legacy is a major motivating factor in her life. She pushes herself to maintain excellent grades to live up to her family's expectations and prepare for a future career in medicine.
Beneath her stern and flawless exterior, however, lies a more vulnerable and complex personality. Aki was formerly a member of the swimming club and has a deep, genuine love for swimming and diving. She is particularly fond of dolphins, inspired by their beautiful way of swimming since she was young. The pressure to meet her family's expectations and maintain her image as the perfect student leader forced her to quit the swimming club to dedicate more time to studying, even taking extra courses on weekends and holidays. This internal conflict is central to her character; she feels she has reached her limit trying to be an ideal student and president, and secretly hates studying, wishing she could simply enjoy swimming instead.
In the story, Aki's initial encounter with the protagonist, Kazuya Maeda, is adversarial. He photographs her coming down the stairs, an act she interprets as perverted, leading to a tense dynamic. This relationship evolves when Kazuya later captures her in a compromising situation, such as climbing the school wall to sneak in after being late, which she tries to make him forget. Using these photos as a form of playful leverage, Kazuya encourages her to break free from her rigid routine. He persuades her to skip school with him, and during their time together at a game center and an aquarium, she confides in him about her insecurities and the immense pressure she feels. This marks a turning point where she can show her imperfect, weaker side to someone.
Key relationships include her friendship with Katsumi Kurebayashi, who leads the photography club. Aki's strictness and Kurebayashi's requests were factors in the decision to split the school's photography activities into a club and a department. Her most significant relationship is with the protagonist, who becomes the only person to see her true self and helps her realize she does not need to be perfect. Through his encouragement, she comes to accept all aspects of herself, eventually rejoining the swimming team and allowing him to photograph her while diving, an activity she truly loves.
Throughout her character arc, Aki develops from a person trapped by her own and her family's expectations into someone who learns to balance her duties with her personal passions. Her notable abilities are her academic excellence, a result of immense hard work, and her physical skills as a former swimmer and diver, which remain a core part of her identity.
