Description
Erii Haruue is a student who transfers to Sakugawa Middle School in Academy City's Seventh School District, becoming a classmate of Kazari Uiharu and Ruiko Saten. Her background is defined by her status as a Child Error, a term used for children who were abandoned by their parents and raised in institutional care facilities. She spent her early years in a facility in the Nineteenth School District, where she formed a profound bond with another girl named Banri Edasaki. The two shared a telepathic connection, and promised to reunite after Banri was transferred to another institution. Erii cherishes this promise, carrying a locket with Banri's photograph as a constant reminder of their friendship.
In terms of personality, Erii is characterized as shy, soft-spoken, and somewhat reserved, which initially makes it difficult for her to make friends. She often displays an air of innocent absent-mindedness, a trait sometimes perceived as eccentric. She might suddenly stare into space, speak to herself seemingly oblivious to others, or even walk into a glass window. Her way of speaking is notable for its gentle and soft quality, often ending sentences with the distinctive verbal tic nano. Another defining aspect of her personality is a strong fondness for food. She is often seen eating with intense concentration, which can result in food remnants on her face, a habit her companions find endearing.
Erii's primary motivation and the central driver of her role in the story is her desperate search for her lost friend, Banri Edasaki. At the start of the narrative, she transfers to the Seventh District specifically to find Banri, whose telepathic calls for help Erii has begun to hear. These calls are born from Banri's suffering while trapped in a comatose state following a failed experiment. Erii is unable to ignore her friend's pain and is determined to rescue her, a quest that inadvertently becomes intertwined with a series of dangerous phenomena known as Poltergeist or RSPK Syndrome incidents.
Her key relationships are central to her development. The most significant is her bond with Banri Edasaki, a fellow Child Error with whom she shares a unique telepathic link. Upon transferring, Erii becomes particularly close to Kazari Uiharu, who becomes her roommate. Their similar gentle personalities lead to a deep and trusting friendship, with Uiharu showing great care and protectiveness towards Erii. Through Uiharu, Erii is welcomed into a circle of friends that includes the protagonist Mikoto Misaka, Shirai Kuroko, and Ruiko Saten. This group provides her with a support system and a sense of belonging she had previously lacked.
Throughout the story, Erii undergoes notable development. Initially a lonely and anxious girl on a solitary mission, she gradually opens up and forms strong bonds of friendship. Her journey from being a passive receiver of her friend's distress signals to an active participant in her own rescue and that of Banri shows significant growth. After being saved from the schemes of the researcher Therestina Kihara Lifeline, who intended to exploit Erii's unique abilities for a dangerous experiment to create a Level 6 esper, she is finally reunited with the now-awakened Banri. In later events, Erii demonstrates increased confidence and agency, choosing to live with Banri after her hospital discharge. She also takes steps toward greater independence, learning to cook and actively participating in events to help her friends, such as volunteering to use her telepathy to establish a communication network during a crisis. Her character arc concludes not as a victim, but as a loyal friend who has found her place and her voice.
Erii's notable ability is a form of Telepathy, officially classified as a Level 2 esper power. Her specific manifestation of this power is primarily passive, meaning she excels at receiving telepathic messages rather than sending them. Under normal circumstances, she can only receive thoughts, which is how she has always communicated with Banri. However, her ability possesses a unique and dangerous latent property. When exposed to specific wavelengths, particularly those generated by Banri's own powers, Erii's receiving capability can skyrocket to the level of a Level 4 or higher esper. This heightened state allows her to inadvertently interfere with the AIM diffusion fields of other espers, causing a resonance effect known as RSPK Syndrome. This phenomenon results in uncontrollable telekinetic events, such as objects flying through the air and localized earthquakes, which formed the basis of the Poltergeist incidents. It was this extraordinary potential that made her a target for Therestina's plan to use a substance called Ability Body Crystal to force her ability into a catastrophic evolution, aiming to create a being who could achieve the god-like state of Level 6. After Banri is saved and awakens, the special conditions that triggered Erii's secondary power cease, and her ability returns to its normal, passive state.
