Description
Misaka 9982 is the 9982nd clone of Misaka Mikoto, produced as part of the Radio Noise Project and the Level 6 Shift Project in Academy City. She serves as one of the combat targets for the esper Accelerator, who kills the clones in an attempt to reach Level 6. She is the first clone that Mikoto meets in the timeline of A Certain Scientific Railgun S.
Her background begins three months before her encounter with Mikoto, when she is decanted with the mental age of a newborn. Her cognition is rapidly corrected through the Testament machine, which imprints knowledge and memories into the clones. Despite the uniformity imposed by the process, Misaka 9982 develops a notably individual personality. She is deeply curious about the outside world and displays a snarky, blunt demeanor, often delivering long, detailed critiques—such as her assessment of poorly prepared tea. She is nonchalant about her role in the experiment and complies without visible emotion when ordered to clean a room containing the bodies of fellow Sisters who have already been killed.
Her primary motivation is to meet Mikoto, whom she refers to as onee-sama. When the two finally meet, Misaka 9982 initially refuses to reveal the nature of the experiments, causing a strained start to their interaction. The bond between them softens when Mikoto gives her a Gekota badge, which she treasures and wears from then on. This relationship is central to her role in the story: her encounter with Mikoto serves as the catalyst for Mikoto’s discovery of the Sister project and her desperate attempts to stop it.
In terms of abilities, Misaka 9982 possesses a diminished version of Mikoto’s electromaster power, comparable to a Level 3 esper. She also uses standard military equipment, such as a rifle, during the experiments. Like all Sisters, she is linked through the Misaka Network, a telepathic connection that shares experiences and data among the clones.
Her development is brief but significant. She displays a desire for autonomy and individuality, asking questions about the outside world and showing a taste for personal preferences. Her death at the hands of Accelerator, after a short fight in which she wounds herself with her own deflected bullets, marks a turning point. It solidifies Mikoto’s resolve and accelerates the confrontation at the heart of the Sisters Arc. Misaka 9982’s personality and her unique bond with Mikoto distinguish her as more than just a disposable clone, highlighting the moral weight of the experiment.
