TV-Series
Description
Haruki Aritomi is a student genius and the primary antagonist introduced in the second half of A Certain Scientific Railgun S. Even by the high standards of Academy City, he is considered an exceptional intellect, having won top awards at the Academy City Research Exhibition Assembly for two consecutive years, including the highest prize two years prior. Despite his academic prowess, he dropped out of Nagatenjouki Academy before a school district meeting and established his own organization named STUDY.
Physically, Aritomi is tall and slender with short black hair, and he is almost always seen wearing a pair of round-framed glasses. He typically dresses in a blue-green uniform consisting of a buttoned collared shirt and pants, often topped with a laboratory coat, reflecting his scientific focus. A shared mannerism with his colleagues in STUDY is the habit of adjusting his glasses with a finger.
Personality-wise, Aritomi is cold, analytical, and an eloquent speaker capable of swaying public opinion with his words. He harbors a deep resentment towards Academy City's esper abilities and the system that prioritizes innate talent over academic effort. He believes that a person's worth is unfairly determined by their power level, a matter he sees as largely based on chance and natural gift rather than hard work. This resentment leads him to publicly criticize espers when the opportunity arises, arguing against what he perceives as their over-reliance on dangerous and unpredictable abilities.
Aritomi's core motivation stems from his frustration that no matter how much a genius like himself studies or how many papers he publishes, he is overshadowed by Level 5 espers, who are celebrated purely for an accident of birth. After having his ideas dismissed by the dark side of the city, including being ridiculed by the researcher Kihara Gensei who compared his work to a mere summer vacation homework assignment, he resolved to prove the worth of his own methods by force.
His grand plan, known as the Chemicaloid Project, was designed to create artificial espers from scratch through a reliable and repeatable scientific process, bypassing what he saw as the flawed randomness of natural development. The culmination of this plan was to launch a terrorist attack dubbed the "Silent Party" on Academy City. By using the ability of his creation, Janie, to control twenty thousand powered suits, he intended to demonstrate the power of his technology and prove that the city's obsession with natural-born espers was a mistake. He and his group, STUDY, believed that by causing a major incident, they could start a revolution against the city's power structure.
In the story, Aritomi serves as the mastermind behind the creation of two artificial beings, or "Chemicaloids": Janie, the core of his project, and Febrie, a spare. He uses Febrie's unique biological makeup, which requires a special antidote candy to survive, as a hostage and a lure. Throughout the arc, he systematically tests and attempts to capture the Level 5 esper Misaka Mikoto for experimental data. He manipulates events from behind the scenes, using his company's influence to obstruct Anti-Skill and setting traps for Misaka and her friends. His key relationships are largely antagonistic or transactional. He is the leader of STUDY, working with other like-minded geniuses, and he coerces the researcher Nunotaba Shinobu into helping him, fully anticipating her betrayal as an additional security measure.
Aritomi's development reveals a villain who is driven by jealousy and a need for recognition. He is not motivated by simple greed or malice but by a genuine, warped belief that he is correcting an unfair system. When his plans are systematically dismantled by Misaka and her allies, his reaction is to trigger a "final phase" that would result in mutual destruction and attempt suicide with a pistol. His attempt is stopped by Misaka, who confronts him directly. In his final moments, he shows a hint of remorse or reconsideration, as he ultimately reveals the location of the spare candy needed to save Febrie's life.
In terms of notable abilities, Haruki Aritomi possesses no known personal esper powers. His strength lies entirely in his genius-level intellect, his skills as a scientific researcher, and his talent for strategy and manipulation. He is a brilliant planner and engineer, capable of creating advanced artificial life forms, developing complex bio-chemical agents, and directing a synchronized attack of thousands of powered suits from a hidden command center.
