Description
Arata Hinohara is the primary protagonist from the modern world who is pulled into the fantastical land of Amawakuni. He is a fifteen-year-old boy from present-day Japan who faced severe hardship during his middle school years. He was once a talented member of the track team, where he was close friends with a fellow runner named Masato Kadowaki. Their friendship ended when Arata, trying to be kind, slowed down during a training run to let Kadowaki win, which Kadowaki perceived as an insult. This incident triggered a campaign of relentless bullying from Kadowaki and his peers, which became so severe that Arata withdrew from school for a period.

As a result of this trauma, Arata Hinohara begins the story as an extremely shy, quiet, and withdrawn individual who lacks self-confidence. His primary goal upon entering high school is simply not to stand out, a defense mechanism developed from years of being a target. He hides his natural athleticism and is wary of forming new friendships, having lost all trust in people after being betrayed by someone he considered his best friend. Despite his deep-seated cynicism and fear of betrayal, his core personality retains a strong sense of justice and personal morals. He will instinctively stand up to protect someone who is being hurt, even if it means drawing attention to himself. When his situation in Tokyo reaches its lowest point, he wishes to disappear for the sake of everyone's happiness, a wish that mysteriously transports him to Amawakuni.

Upon arriving in Amawakuni, Arata is immediately thrust into a dangerous political conspiracy. He is mistaken for another boy named Arata of the Hime Clan, who is fleeing after being framed for the murder of the land's princess. Hinohara is quickly arrested, put on trial for a crime he did not commit, and exiled to the hellish Gatoya Island. This traumatic beginning in a new world mirrors his life in Japan, but it also becomes the catalyst for his growth. His role in the story evolves from a passive victim to an active hero on an epic quest to restore order, clear his name, and save the princess who is barely clinging to life. He is chosen as a Sho, a warrior who wields a divine weapon known as a Hayagami, and is destined to become the Emperor of Hinowa.

His journey is defined by the key relationships he forms. The most important is with Kotoha, a girl from Amawakuni who is the first person to show him unwavering kindness and belief. She gives him her own magical stone and teaches him that his life has meaning and that he must learn to love himself. Over time, he develops a crush on her, and her presence motivates him to be brave. He also develops a complex relationship with his counterpart, Arata of the Hime Clan. Though initially suspicious and untrusting of anyone, Hinohara learns to communicate with the other Arata through a magical stone. This connection allows them to share information about their swapped lives and provides Hinohara with a crucial ally who can guide him from his home world. His former friend Masato Kadowaki is eventually pulled into Amawakuni as well, becoming his primary rival for the throne, and their unresolved past continues to fuel their conflict. On Gatoya Island, he also befriends the criminals Kanate and Ginchi, who join his party and help him on his quest.

Arata Hinohara undergoes significant development, slowly shedding his role as a victim. His time in Amawakuni forces him to fight back against powerful oppressors like the Twelve Shinsho, who abuse their authority. By standing up for the common citizens, he learns to value himself and his own strength. He moves from a place of profound loneliness and distrust to becoming a leader capable of inspiring loyalty in his companions.

His notable abilities are tied to his status as a Sho. He wields a Hayagami, a god-forged weapon that initially manifests as a rusted sword with the power of wind, called Goshintai. As he grows, his true Hayagami is revealed to be named Tsukuyo, the god of light, which takes the form of a sword. His physical conditioning from his years in middle school track gives him exceptional athleticism, speed, and endurance, which serve him well in combat.
