Description
Nagatomimaru is the alias used by Ieshige Tokugawa, the eldest son of the eighth Tokugawa shogun, when he secretly ventures out from the palace. He is a young man who possesses no notable physical strength or combat ability, but he compensates for this with a deep and insatiable thirst for knowledge. His studious nature drives him to seek out information on a wide range of subjects, including the giant insects known as Mushi that plague Edo. Because of his desire to research these creatures, he attempts to infiltrate the Insect Magistrate's Office under the false name Nagatomimaru in order to access its restricted archives. He is caught during this attempt, but a deal is struck after his true identity is discovered.
In terms of personality, Nagatomimaru is a serious and reserved individual who has grown disillusioned with people and the political dishonesty around him. He habitually wears a Noh mask to conceal his emotions and his disgust for the lies he encounters. This mask allows him to hide his true feelings and maintain a composed exterior. Despite his cynical outlook, he is fundamentally studious and dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, finding solace in books and learning.
He is motivated by a genuine curiosity about the world and a desire to understand the Mushi threat. His role in the story is that of a knowledgeable ally who provides crucial information to the main characters, particularly after he befriends the protagonist, Jinbei Tsukishima. His key relationship is with Jinbei, who respects him for his wisdom and treats him as a friend, unaware for a time that Nagatomimaru is actually the future shogun. This friendship marks a significant development for Nagatomimaru, as he begins to open up and place more trust in others, overcoming some of his earlier disillusionment.
Regarding notable abilities, Nagatomimaru possesses no special fighting skills. His greatest asset is his intellect and extensive knowledge, which he readily applies to assist the Insect Magistrate in their battles against the Mushi. His true value lies in his analytical mind and his capacity to understand the nature of the threats they face.
