Description
Keita Wakui is a supporting character in Devil Survivor 2 The Animation, a sixteen-year-old second-year high school student from Osaka who is a dedicated member of his school's boxing club. He has a youthful appearance, with short gray hair styled in a crewcut and steel-gray eyes, and typically wears his school uniform with a red shirt underneath. His small stature, standing at 160 centimeters tall and weighing 47 kilograms, belies his considerable strength and fighting ability.
Keita possesses a personality that is initially unfriendly and distant, as he prefers to operate as a lone wolf and does not readily allow others to get close to him. This antisocial demeanor is a deliberate choice, rooted in a past where his father was betrayed by a friend, leading to a large debt and the disappearance of his parents. As a result of this childhood trauma, he views friendship as useless and maintains a thick rivalry with anyone he deems strong, harboring an obsession with becoming more powerful through constant training. Despite his cold exterior, Keita has a hidden kinder side. He typically ignores cries for help but often ends up using his amazing strength to assist others anyway. In the animated version, this manifests as classic tsundere behavior; he becomes flustered and blushes with embarrassment when someone like Hibiki Kuze expresses concern or gratitude, outwardly denying his feelings while secretly acting to protect his companions.
His primary motivation is the pursuit of strength, a drive that sees him constantly training on his punching bag and seeking out powerful opponents. Before turning to the structured environment of boxing, he was known as the "Raging Wolf of Minami," a fearsome street brawler who challenged thugs to become stronger. He eventually turned to boxing because he believed it was an easier path to increasing his power. This desire for personal strength dictates his actions, leading him to refuse to join a search party upon first meeting the protagonist's group, as he had already planned to hunt demons alone. His deep-seated hatred for demons further fuels his solitary crusade.
In the story of the anime, Keita is introduced as a summoner working for the Osaka branch of JP's, often alongside his acquaintance Hinako Kujou. His role is brief but pivotal. When the protagonist Hibiki and his friends arrive in Osaka, Keita is unwelcoming and quickly departs on his own mission. After the JP's computer system is hacked, Hinako receives a "death clip" from Nicaea predicting Keita will die by falling down a flight of stairs. The group rushes to an abandoned theme park, the Festival Gate, where they find him under attack by the demons Gozuki and Mezuki. After Hinako saves him from being impaled, Keita grudgingly joins Hibiki and Hinako to fight off the demons. When Io Nitta is thrown from a high floor by the demon Botis, Keita reluctantly commands his demon to catch her, saving her life. This act of reluctant heroism culminates in his defining moment; after Botis seemingly reappears and prepares a devastating lightning attack, Keita reflexively pushes Hibiki out of the blast zone. He is struck by the force and falls down the stairs to his death, fulfilling the grim prophecy of his death clip. His sacrifice leaves a significant impact on Hibiki, influencing the protagonist's later stance on protecting innocent lives. In the world reset by Hibiki's wish at the end of the series, Keita is seen alive once more, being interviewed about his boxing ambitions.
Keita's key relationships are defined by his guarded nature. He is often at odds with members of JP's, particularly the scientist Fumi Kanno and his fellow fighters Hinako Kujou and Jungo Torii. His interactions with Jungo are especially contentious, as their differing views on friendship cause frequent arguments. Despite this friction, a moment of silent cooperation occurs when Keita secretly saves Jungo from an unseen demon, hinting that his belief that supporting teammates is "not as bad as he had convinced himself". His most significant relationship in the anime is with Hibiki, for whom he ultimately gives his life, an act that underscores the genuine, if hidden, care he has for others.
In terms of abilities, Keita is a formidable physical fighter, relying on his exceptional strength and agility rather than magic. He is a demon summoner who uses a red cell phone to summon his primary demon, the Berserker, reflecting his own reckless and headstrong nature in battle. His boxing skills translate directly into his combat style, focusing on powerful physical attacks and techniques like "Deathbound" and "Berserk" that leverage his high strength. His relentless training has made him a skilled close-quarters combatant, capable of defeating demons with his bare hands before even needing to summon his demonic ally.
