Description
The Anguished One is a mysterious and pivotal figure in Devil Survivor 2 The Animation, a being whose nature bridges the gap between humanity's protectors and its destroyers. His origins lie not with humans but as Alcor, the eighth member of the Septentriones, a group of entities sent to pass judgment on humanity. Unlike his mechanical counterparts who execute their programming without question, the Anguished One developed something unique: emotions and a genuine fascination with people. This divergence from his intended purpose led him to doubt his own existence as a mere mechanism of the higher power known as Polaris.
In physical appearance, the Anguished One has a striking and ethereal look. He possesses curly white hair and a very pale complexion, with a perpetual squint that gives him a sleepy, almost enigmatic expression, further emphasized by white markings around his eyes. He wears a distinctive red and black striped shirt with a frilled undershirt, an outfit complemented by black pants and matching shoes. In the anime adaptation, his shoes are colored half-black and half-red, with the black portion facing inward. His true form as a Septentrione is a cube with the same red and black striped pattern, encased in a blue frame, though he prefers to battle in his human shape, using razor-sharp tentacle-like wires as weapons.
The Anguished One’s personality is a complex blend of otherworldly detachment and deep-seated kindness. Despite his sinister appearance and the often-threatening nature of his actions, he is fundamentally a kind entity who wishes the best for humanity. He has little understanding of human customs or common sense, often finding even the smallest aspects of human behavior amusing and holding profound, bewildering conversations. He is intensely fond of the protagonist, Hibiki Kuze, whom he calls the Shining One, and takes everything Hibiki says with absolute seriousness. While typically calm and almost always seen with a serene smile, he is not afraid to threaten or kill those who interfere with his plans, doing so with great calm and without malice.
His motivation stems from his role as the benefactor of human civilization. In ancient times, he saw potential within humans and gifted them with language, culture, and fire, acting as a Promethean figure. When he realized that Polaris and the other Septentriones intended to wipe out humanity, he turned against them. He secretly aided the Hotsuin family, giving them the technology and summoning spells needed to protect Japan, and even created the Nicaea website and the demon summoning app to give humans a fighting chance at survival and a choice in their own destiny. His ultimate goal is to secure true freedom for humanity, free from the control of any administrator.
Within the story of the anime, the Anguished One acts as a cryptic guide and a wild card. He appears before Hibiki and his friends, delivering crucial information about the Septentriones and testing humanity's potential. He is initially distrusted by the group, as his actions can appear hostile, such as when he sends death clips or attacks the Tsuutenkaku in an attempt to strand and eliminate Yamato Hotsuin, whom he sees as a threat to humanity's freedom due to Yamato’s desire to remake the world in his own image. His key relationships are with Hibiki, whom he views as the key to everything, and with Yamato, whose betrayal of his original purpose forces the Anguished One to take drastic action.
Throughout the series, the Anguished One develops from a detached observer into an active participant who yearns to be more than a system. His interactions with Hibiki and his friends convince him that his will is his own and not simply a malfunction of his programming. He reveals his true name, Alcor, and later renames himself Al Saiduq when he fully commits to the path of helping humanity overthrow Polaris. His abilities are considerable: he can summon and command powerful demons like Bifrons, materialize and dematerialize a cell phone at will, and is even revealed to be an excellent cook, capable of making anything delicious by manipulating its molecules. Despite his immense power, he has odd limitations, such as not knowing how to walk on the ground due to being accustomed to floating. Ultimately, the Anguished One stands as a unique being who chose compassion over duty, seeking to grant humanity the right to forge its own future.
