Description
Karoku is a pivotal figure in the narrative, primarily known as the object of the protagonist Nai's search and the creator of the bracelet that binds the two. He is a young man of 18 years with distinctive water-colored hair and eyes, standing at 175 cm tall. His background is tied to the world's central organizations; his parents were researchers at the Research Tower, a facility connected to the national defense organization known as Circus. Despite possessing a high-level circus bracelet, he himself is not a formal member of Circus.
One of the most defining aspects of Karoku's character is his existence in two separate forms. At some point in the past, he was split into two distinct entities. One Karoku is gentle and resides within Circus, often found on its Second Ship. The other Karoku is a member of the antagonistic organization Kafka and possesses a far more sinister personality. The latter is frequently referred to as a clone or a duplicate, and he harbors a deep resentment for his counterpart, going so far as to attempt to kill the gentler Karoku. This darker version displays a possessive and manipulative nature, particularly regarding Nai, whom he calls his special child. He has demonstrated sadistic tendencies, such as when he listens to Nai's screams and asks for more, and is willing to threaten or kill those he perceives as standing in his way, including Nai's close companion, Gareki, in order to force Nai to return to him.
The central motivation for Nai is to find Karoku, and in turn, Karoku's own motivations are heavily centered on Nai. The gentle Karoku, after being rescued and brought to the Second Ship, initially suffered from a loss of memory and showed Nai no recognition. However, with Nai's persistent efforts, he eventually recovered his memories. Choosing to remain by Nai's side out of gratitude and affection, he later used his medical abilities to save Nai's life when he was on the verge of death. His role in the story is thus dual: he is both the goal of the initial quest and a supportive ally once his gentle self is recovered. The darker Karoku, meanwhile, serves as an antagonist, using his own connection to Nai to lure and manipulate him for his own possessive purposes.
Karoku's key relationships are defined by these two existences. His bond with Nai is the most significant; the gentle version treats Nai with care and has lived with him, while the darker version sees Nai as a possession to be controlled. His relationship with Gareki is notably hostile, particularly for the Kafka Karoku, who views Gareki as a threat and an obstacle to be eliminated. Within Kafka, he is acquainted with a young girl named Erishuka, who holds romantic feelings for him. Regarding the two versions of himself, the Kafka Karoku displays a sense of superiority and animosity, viewing his gentle counterpart as old clothes to be discarded, while the Circus Karoku is the target of this aggression.
The character undergoes notable development, primarily through the experience of memory loss and recovery. After being brought to Circus, the gentle Karoku regains his lost identity and past with Nai, leading him to consciously decide to stay with Nai rather than leave. This development is further expanded upon in the source material, which reveals more of his history, including his time with his mother in the Rainbow Forest after fleeing their hometown, providing deep insight into Nai's origins and how Nai came to be. Later story developments also suggest that he is connected to Nai's creation, as it is confirmed that Nai is part of a species called Niji and was made that way by Karoku.
Karoku possesses several notable abilities. He is highly skilled in medicine and healing, a talent he inherited from his research scientist parents and which he uses to save Nai's life. He can communicate with Nai over vast distances using brainwaves, a form of telepathy that is often a one-way connection from him to Nai. This ability is utilized by both versions of Karoku. Furthermore, he is the original owner of the special circus bracelet that Nai wears, which serves as the key link between them and the initial reason for Nai's journey.
