Description
Nai is one of the main protagonists in the anime and manga series Karneval. He is a small, thin boy of indeterminate age, standing about 157 centimeters tall, with a rounded face, large scarlet eyes, and pale features. His hair is white, with the exception of the bangs framing his face, which are lavender. Nai is later revealed to be a rare creature known as a Niji, a fact that surprises those around him.
Nai's background is shrouded in mystery. He claims to have lived with a man named Karoku in a forest near Karasuna, and he knows very little about the outside world. His journey begins when Karoku disappears, leaving Nai with only an old bracelet and the name Karoku as clues to his whereabouts. Alone and confused, Nai is captured by a woman who intends to keep him as a pet, but he is eventually rescued by a thief named Gareki. Together, they flee and soon encounter the powerful defense organization known as Circus. Seeking protection and answers, Nai and Gareki join Circus, unaware that Karoku is connected to the secret organization Kafka, which conducts illegal genetic experiments.
Nai's personality is defined by his kind-hearted, pure, and innocent nature. He is notably naive, as shown when he initially does not even know what blood is. He is very trusting and caring, but his dependence on others often leads him into trouble. Despite first appearing timid and shy, Nai's actions are frequently surprising and bold. He displays a childlike enthusiasm for simple pleasures such as playing hide and seek with sheep and basking in the sun. He has a pronounced dislike for studying and lessons, especially those given by Tsukumo. His name means "nothing, not existing," which deeply connects to his primary motivation: a search for his own identity and a sense of belonging. He wants to understand who he is and where he came from, and his quest to find Karoku is central to this search.
Nai's role in the story is that of a main protagonist whose journey drives the narrative forward. His search for Karoku leads him and Gareki into the world of Circus and Kafka, uncovering the truth about Niji, Varugas, and the experiments being conducted. He is affiliated with Circus as a special member, and his unique abilities make him a valuable asset, though he is often protected by others.
The most critical relationship in Nai's life is with Gareki. Their bond begins when Gareki helps him escape from captivity, and it deepens into a strong, protective friendship. Gareki's initial cynicism and irritability contrast sharply with Nai's innocence, but Gareki becomes a devoted protector who scolds Nai for his mistakes while caring for him deeply. Nai also forms a close bond with Yogi, who treats him playfully and becomes a frequent companion. Tsukumo serves as a teacher figure, although Nai dislikes structured lessons with her. His affiliation with Circus gives him a larger family of allies, including Hirato and others, all of whom contribute to his growth and understanding of community.
Throughout the series, Nai undergoes significant development. His vocabulary expands notably, although he often uses words incorrectly and is corrected by Gareki. He learns to trust his own abilities and gains confidence. A pivotal moment occurs when he demonstrates courage for the first time by rushing to defend Gareki during a dangerous battle, marking a turning point in his self-assurance. His journey from a dependent, innocent boy to a more capable and brave individual is central to his arc.
Nai possesses heightened abilities due to his nature as a Niji. He has extraordinarily developed senses, particularly his hearing, which allow him to perceive his surroundings with great clarity. He also possesses enhanced agility and the ability to navigate complex environments and evade danger effectively. His inherent abilities can evolve, especially as he learns to use them in coordination with his companions.
