Description
Christa is the assumed identity of Historia Reiss, the illegitimate daughter of Rod Reiss, the true ruler of the walls. Born into the royal family but denied status as a child of an affair, she endured a profoundly neglectful and abusive childhood. Raised on a remote farm, her mother Alma regretted her existence and rejected her, and the local children ostracized and threw stones at her. The only kindness she knew came from secret visits by her half-sister, Frieda Reiss, who taught her to read and encouraged her to be a good person. These memories were later erased by Frieda using the power of the Founding Titan. When the Wall Maria fell, Rod Reiss attempted to bring Historia and her mother into the household, but they were intercepted by soldiers sent to eliminate threats to the family's honor. Her mother was killed, her final words expressing hatred for her daughter. To save her life, Rod forced Historia to renounce her heritage, adopt a false name, and enlist in the military with the expectation that she would die in obscurity. The name Christa was inspired by a kind-hearted storybook heroine.

Under the identity Christa Lenz, she cultivated a persona of extreme kindness, selflessness, and gentleness. She presented herself as quiet, helpful, and angelic, a facade so convincing that her fellow trainees came to see her as a goddess or a pure-hearted ideal. This personality, however, was a calculated performance born from a deep psychological need to be loved and accepted, as well as a self-destructive desire for an honorable death that would erase the shame of her birth. She genuinely struggled with empathy and held an incredibly low sense of self-worth, believing herself to be an empty person unworthy of love. The Christa persona was a "good girl" she played to earn the admiration she felt she did not deserve, and her seemingly noble acts of self-sacrifice often concealed a reckless disregard for her own life.

Her primary motivation shifts from seeking validation and self-obliteration through the Christa persona to, later, a desire to live for herself with pride. Initially, she acts to be loved and to feel useful, even if it costs her life. Her true motivations begin to surface due to her relationship with Ymir, who sees through her facade and loves the broken, real Historia rather than the perfect Christa. Ultimately, she finds the strength to reject both her father's manipulative plans and the hollow "good girl" identity, choosing instead to fight for her friends and seize control over her own destiny.

In the story, Christa first appears as a popular and admired member of the 104th Cadet Corps, graduating 10th in her class, a rank manipulated by Ymir to keep her safer. She joins the Survey Corps, where her background as a member of the true royal family becomes a central political issue. The Survey Corps launches a coup d'état to install her as queen, a role she accepts after confronting her father, Rod Reiss. When he transforms into a colossal, aberrant Titan, it is Christa who delivers the killing blow, definitively rejecting his plans for her and embracing her true name and power. She is crowned Queen of the Walls, forging a new identity separate from both the fabricated Christa and the broken Historia of her past.

Her key relationships are central to her development. Her bond with Ymir is the most significant; Ymir is the only person who accepts her true self, and Christa responds with fierce loyalty and love, even declaring she would side with Ymir against the world. Ymir's later departure to protect Reiner and Bertholdt leaves Christa devastated and disillusioned, accelerating her descent into apathy before her eventual rise. Reiner Braun harbors a strong, unrequited infatuation with the Christa persona. Her father, Rod Reiss, views her only as a tool to continue the royal bloodline and reclaim the Founding Titan, a manipulation she ultimately rejects. Eren Yeager also plays a role, as his blunt observation that the perfect Christa is "creepy" and that she seems more genuine when being herself helps validate her real feelings.

Christa's character development is the story of a constructed identity being shed to reveal a authentic self. She transforms from the suicidal, people-pleasing "goddess" Christa into the apathetic and broken Historia, and finally into the assertive and resolute Queen Historia. This growth culminates in her decision to live with pride, seizing land from corrupt nobles to fund an orphanage and personally caring for the children there, an act that directly counters her own neglected upbringing. This is a drastic evolution from the girl who once sought death as a reward for being good.

In terms of notable abilities, Christa is a capable soldier, having graduated 10th in her class and proficient with vertical maneuvering equipment. Her true power, however, lies in her royal bloodline. As a direct descendant of the titan-originating royal family, her lineage has unique and significant properties, such as being able to inherit and utilize the Founding Titan's power under specific conditions. Beyond combat, her demonstrated ability to remain calm and connect with animals and frightened individuals hints at an innate, genuine charisma that exists apart from her fabricated Christa persona.
