Description
Franken Stein is a character who appears in the anime and manga series Blood Lad. He is a scientist who resides in the Demon World, maintaining a laboratory where he conducts various forms of research and experimentation. His physical appearance includes features such as piercings, dreadlocks, gray skin, a lab coat, fangs, and a muscular build.
Stein’s role in the story is primarily that of a knowledgeable and methodical researcher. When the ghost girl Fuyumi Yanagi begins to experience a dangerous physical deterioration, the werewolf Wolf and his companion Mame bring her to Stein’s lab for analysis. In this role, he diagnoses her condition, explaining that her body is being overloaded because she has vampire blood from Staz Charlie Blood mixed with her own ghostly essence and cannot absorb the necessary magical energy. He determines that this incompatibility is causing her to fade away.
Based on his analysis, Stein presents potential solutions. He theorizes that Fuyumi possesses a unique ability to transform into different types of demons if she consumes their essence. One method to save her life would be for her to fully absorb Staz’s vampire magic, which would transform her into a powerful hybrid but would effectively erase Staz’s existence. This proposal highlights Stein's pragmatic, problem-solving mindset, driven by his scientific curiosity and his desire to see the outcome of such a transformation.
Stein’s background is tied to a legacy of creation. His ancestor was known for stitching together pieces of different monsters. Following in this tradition, Stein stitched together parts of various demons to create what he considers his greatest and most powerful creation, an artificial demon named Akimu Papladon. This creation, however, proved to be a critical failure. Akimu rebelled against his creator, believing his body was worthy of more powerful parts. He escaped Stein’s laboratory using spatial magic, a power Stein did not know he possessed, becoming a major threat to the Demon World.
The escape of Akimu is the driving force behind many of Stein’s actions. His desire to create Fuyumi as a vampire hybrid is presented as a direct plan to produce a monster even more powerful than Akimu, one capable of defeating his rogue creation. This reveals a motivation rooted in a combination of scientific ambition and a sense of responsibility for the danger he unleashed. He is willing to create powerful entities, even if the methods are ethically questionable, to solve the problems his own experiments have caused. His key relationships are therefore defined by his role as a creator to his failed experiment Akimu and as an analyst and consultant to the main characters who come to him for help.
