Description
Choi Mochimazzwi is a young girl who serves as an aide to the prince of a distant, tropical island nation, which is also the homeland of the talking bird Dera Mochimazzwi. She is a fortune teller for the Mochimazzwi royal family, and in this capacity, she uses birds and an ocarina to perform divinations, often employing Dera as a conduit for her predictions during important events. Regarding her physical appearance, Choi is notably petite, standing at 145 centimeters tall. She has short, jet-black hair often adorned with a trinket, and deep magenta eyes. Her skin is a darker tone than the residents of the Usagiyama Shopping District, and she initially goes barefoot, wearing gold anklets and bracelets, a custom from her warm homeland.
In terms of personality, Choi is generally polite, well-mannered, and speaks in a formal and solemn tone befitting her position within the royal household. However, she can become reserved and suspicious when she feels she has been deceived. Upon her arrival, Dera misleads her into believing that the Kitashirakawa family is holding him against his will, which causes her to behave coldly and distrustfully towards the people of the shopping district. Despite her small stature, she is assertive and easily embarrassed when she makes a mistake, such as assuming the taller Kanna Makino is much younger. She maintains a strong sense of duty and feels compelled to repay acts of kindness, which leads her to offer fortune-telling services to the shopkeepers as a gesture of gratitude for their hospitality.
Choi's primary motivation is her loyalty to the prince, for whom she harbors secret romantic feelings. She blushes when speaking of him or in his presence, and her dedication to her mission is deeply personal. Her role in the story begins when she arrives at Tamako's home to investigate Dera's failed mission to find a bride for the prince. After her initial distrust fades, she integrates into the community, even briefly attending school with Tamako and her friends to monitor Dera. Her purpose solidifies when she discovers that Tamako has the same fragrance as the prince and a matching mark on her nape, leading her to believe Tamako is the destined bride. She subsequently treats Tamako with great respect, calling her "Lady Tamako."
Choi has several key relationships. Her relationship with Tamako Kitashirakawa evolves from suspicion to a close friendship, especially after Tamako cares for her when she falls ill. She is the direct superior of the bird Dera, but unlike her formal demeanor with others, she treats him harshly, frequently scolding him for his weight gain and viewing him as a lazy and unreliable subordinate. Her relationship with Prince Mecha is central to her character, defined by deep devotion and an unrequited crush that she keeps mostly private. She is also known to have known the prince since they were children.
Throughout her time in the story, Choi undergoes noticeable development. She arrives as an outsider who is suspicious and homesick, but she gradually accepts the warmth of the shopping district community. Her personal conflict becomes evident as she watches another shopkeeper prepare for marriage, which forces her to confront her own feelings for the prince. In a significant turn, she later confesses that she deliberately withheld a complete divination because she wished so strongly for Tamako to be the prince's bride, implying that her own feelings led her to project the ideal outcome. When Tamako ultimately declines the proposal, Choi accepts the decision and returns to her homeland with the prince. Her notable abilities include her skill in fortune-telling, which is accurate and respected, as well as sewing.
