Description
Fuku Kitashirakawa is the grandfather of Tamako and Anko Kitashirakawa, and the father of Mamedai Kitashirakawa. He lives with the family above their mochi shop, Tama-ya, in the Usagiyama Shopping District. As the third head of the shop, he represents the generation that continued the family business started by his own grandfather. He is a supporting character throughout the series and also appears in the film Tamako Love Story.
Fuku has the appearance of a capable but elderly man. He has gray hair that is swept back from his forehead, revealing his face with noticeable wrinkles. His eyes are black, and he stands at a height of 165 centimeters. His birthday is March 16.
His personality is defined by kindness, compassion, and a relaxed, laid-back demeanor. He is very lenient with his granddaughters, often responding to their needs and curiosity in a gentle tone that contrasts sharply with the harsher, more stubborn nature of their father, Mamedai. Fuku rarely panics, even in situations where concern might be expected; for instance, when he once choked on mochi and had to be rushed to the hospital, he behaved as though nothing serious had happened. He is also full of compassion, as shown when he secretly gave food to the bird Dera Mochimazzi during his diet, a small act of rebellion that his family discovered.
Fuku's primary role in the story is as a gentle, stabilizing presence in the Kitashirakawa household. He is the one who protects the peace of the family, particularly when Mamedai and the girls have disagreements. An example of this is when he mediated an argument between Mamedai and Anko, proposing a compromise that allowed Anko to help at the shop in the morning and still go to the museum on time. While he contributes to the work of making mochi, especially traditional varieties like mame daifuku, his role is largely that of a patriarch overseeing the family from a place of quiet wisdom.
His key relationships are with his family. He is the loving grandfather to Tamako and Anko, to whom he is devoted, listing his granddaughters as his favorite thing. He is the father of Mamedai, and the combination of their names, Mamedai and Fuku, together forms the name of the bean glutinous rice cake, mame daifuku, which is the signature product of their shop. Compared to Mamedai's traditional and sometimes rigid approach, Fuku provides a more flexible and understanding counterbalance. He is also generous to Dera, the visiting bird, offering him food and a place to stay within the home.
Fuku undergoes minimal development, as his role is to be a consistent and wise foundation for the family. His notable abilities include his skill as a master mochi maker, a craft he has likely practiced for decades. He also possesses a talent for winking, which is listed as his specialty. More significantly, his ability to arbitrate family conflicts and maintain a calm, warm atmosphere in both the home and the shop is his greatest contribution to the story.
