Description
The character known as Heroine is the central protagonist of the visual novel and anime Amnesia. She is a nineteen-year-old university student who also works part-time at a cafe called Meido no Hitsuji. Physically, she is depicted as a young woman with shoulder-length light brown hair that fades into pinkish tips and emerald eyes with a hint of blue. Her typical outfit includes a blue collared dress, a black cardigan, white shoes, and a white sling bag. Throughout both the game and the anime, she is never given a specific name; the player names her in the interactive game, and in the animated adaptation, she is referred to simply as the heroine or protagonist.

The defining aspect of this character is her condition. On August 1st, she wakes up with complete amnesia, having lost all memories of her life, her relationships, and her own identity. Her journey begins when she meets a young spirit named Orion in a void between worlds. Orion explains that his collision with her consciousness during his travel to the human world caused her memory loss. Because of this, he can see and be heard only by her, and he takes it upon himself to guide her. A primary rule she must follow is to hide her amnesia from everyone around her, as revealing it could lead to unpredictable and dangerous consequences.

Because she has lost all of her memories, her personality becomes fluid. In her original state of amnesia, she is often seen as a blank slate, quiet, shy, and somewhat passive, largely due to her confusion and the constant fear of making a mistake. However, through the memories and descriptions provided by others, it is revealed that her character changes depending on which parallel world she inhabits. For instance, in the world associated with Shin, she was known as an energetic girl who loved to sing. In the world associated with Ikki, her friends recall her as being more of a tsundere, or someone who is initially傲娇. In the world associated with Kent, their relationship was marked by frequent arguments due to his logical nature clashing with her emotional responses. A constant thread, regardless of the world, is a fundamentally sweet and considerate nature, though her amnesia causes her to appear clumsy and detached as she struggles to react appropriately to situations she should remember.

The Heroines motivation is simple but absolute: to recover her lost memories and understand her own life. With Orions help, she navigates a series of complex social relationships, interacting with men who claim to be her boyfriend, her childhood friend, or her senior. Her role in the story is that of a detective investigating her own past. As she lives her daily life, she experiences fragmented flashbacks, which are often triggered by familiar places or events. These fragments, however, are complicated by the fact that she does not simply exist in one linear timeline. She travels between parallel worlds, each one revolving around a different romantic relationship. This causes immense confusion, as memories from one world do not fit into the context of another, making her believe she is slipping through time or having strange dreams. Her ultimate challenge is to piece together a consistent identity from these contradictory pieces of her former selves.

Regarding her key relationships, her most crucial bond is with the spirit Orion. He is her only confidant and advisor, providing commentary and strategic advice on how to interact with suspicious friends and potential lovers. In the various parallel worlds, her relationships change radically. In the Heart world, her boyfriend is Shin, a sharp-tongued younger man who is also her childhood friend. In the Spade world, she is dating the popular and flirtatious Ikki, which places her in danger from his obsessive fan club. In the Club world, she is involved with the logical and mathematical Kent. Finally, in the Diamond world, she navigates a protective and eventually dangerous relationship with her other childhood friend, Toma. Hidden behind all of this is the mysterious figure of Ukyo, who is later revealed to be her true lover from the original timeline.

The development of the Heroine is directly tied to her accumulation of memories. Initially completely helpless and reliant on Orion for basic social cues, she gradually learns to navigate the conflicting personalities and expectations of the people around her. As she experiences events in different worlds, she regains fragments of strength and assertiveness that belonged to her past selves. Her journey is not just about regaining facts, but about reclaiming the ability to make choices and trust her own judgment. Ultimately, as she uncovers the truth of the original world involving Ukyo and the entity named Neil, she evolves from a passive victim of circumstance into an individual capable of deciding her own fate, choosing which world and which memories she wishes to accept as her reality.

While she has no supernatural powers in a traditional sense, the Heroine possesses one notable ability stemming from her condition: her consciousness can travel between parallel worlds. This ability is not voluntary but is a consequence of Orions collision with her spirit. This allows her to inhabit different versions of her life, giving her a unique perspective that no one else possesses. However, this is often portrayed as a burden, as the constant shifting creates psychological strain and confusion rather than providing a tactical advantage. She is also immune to certain supernatural influences, such as the hypnotic power of Ikkis eyes, which affects all other women but leaves her unaffected, a trait that is a major plot point in the Spade world.
