Description
Momiji is a Goddess of Misfortune, also known as a God of Poverty, sent from the realm of the gods to the human world with the mission of draining the excess Fortune Energy possessed by the teenage girl Ichiko Sakura. Her appearance reflects her divine role: she has blue hair tied in messy pigtails, tired-looking red eyes, and typically wears a tattered kimono with long detached sleeves. A permanent cast on her right arm, a flat chest, and a cardboard box under a bridge for a home are all markers of the misfortune that clings to her, in stark contrast to Ichiko's overflowing luck.
Her personality is loud, sarcastic, and endlessly persistent. She delights in teasing Ichiko and devises elaborate, often absurd, schemes to steal her fortune. She is a master of disguise and pop-culture parody, frequently using various gadgets and misfortune-based spirits to harass her target. Despite her chaotic and seemingly irresponsible exterior, Momiji is intelligent, determined, and possesses a sharp emotional insight. She is also highly self-aware, often breaking the fourth wall and making meta-commentary about anime tropes.
Her motivation begins strictly as a divine duty: to correct the cosmic imbalance caused by Ichiko's unnatural luck. As the story progresses, however, she becomes genuinely invested in Ichiko's personal growth. She uses her presence not only to drain fortune but to challenge Ichiko's selfishness and isolation, helping her develop empathy and genuine human connections. This shift in motivation leads her to risk her standing in the gods' realm to protect Ichiko from more ruthless deities.
In the story, Momiji serves as the deuteragonist and primary rival of Ichiko Sakura. Their relationship starts as a chaotic, slapstick rivalry but gradually deepens into an unspoken friendship and a sisterly bond. She works under the supervision of the high-ranking God of Misfortune Yamabuki, and is often accompanied by her familiar, Momoo Inugami, a masochistic canine deity. Momiji also interacts with Ichiko's other friends, such as Keita Tsuwabuki and Bobby, often providing comic relief or subtle guidance.
Her notable abilities include manifesting monsters and spirits out of misfortune energy, though these creatures are often useless in direct combat. She is resourceful with gadgets and disguise, and she possesses the power to absorb and redistribute Fortune Energy. Beyond her supernatural toolkit, her greatest strength is her emotional intelligence: she recognizes Ichiko's loneliness and helps her become a more balanced and compassionate person. Over the course of the series, Momiji evolves from a one-note antagonist into a flawed, relatable deuteragonist whose own loneliness and desire for connection mirror Ichiko's, making her the emotional core of the story.
