Description
Kouki Akune is a second-year student at Hakoniwa Academy and serves as the secretary of the student council under Medaka Kurokami, making him the oldest member of the group. Originally a member of the judo club, he is known as the Prince of Judo because of his natural combat instincts and prodigious talent in the martial art. His backstory reveals a starkly different figure: during middle school, he was a violent delinquent known as the Destroyer, and he once acted as an enforcer for Misogi Kumagawa, the student council president there. Under Kumagawa’s orders, he attacked Medaka while she was injured and refused to fight back, continuing his assault until Zenkichi Hitoyoshi gathered a group of her supporters to intervene. Medaka then stopped Zenkichi from retaliating, and that moment of mercy transformed Akune. He immediately developed a deep infatuation with Medaka and began to turn away from violence, gradually abandoning his destructive temperament.
His personality is shaped by that unrequited devotion. Akune has remained profoundly enamoured with Medaka since middle school, and this affection colours much of his behaviour. He harbours a strong resentment toward Zenkichi for the unbreakable childhood bond they share, seeing him as an obstacle and a rival for Medaka’s attention. Despite this jealousy, he is capable of working alongside Zenkichi and the rest of the student council, and over time his abrasive edges soften. He shows little genuine desire to hurt others and becomes a reliable, if sometimes dramatic, ally. Around his fellow council members he can be haughty or dismissive, but he genuinely cares for their well‑being and the council’s mission, even when he cloaks that care in sarcasm or pride.
His primary motivation is to stay close to Medaka and prove himself worthy of her recognition. He dedicates himself to carrying out the council’s duties, often addressing the more violent or physical problems that arise, because his fighting background makes him well suited for confrontation. At the same time, his feelings for Medaka drive him to compete with Zenkichi whenever an opportunity presents itself, turning routine tasks into personal contests. Beyond his emotional attachment, Akune also finds a sense of belonging in the council’s shared goal of helping students, and he takes pride in his role as secretary.
In the story told in Medaka Box Abnormal, Akune is a core member of the student council as it faces threats like the Flask Plan and the Thirteen Party. He participates directly in the council’s battles against superhuman students, using his fighting ability to hold the line while his comrades devise strategies. His position as a seasoned second‑year and his combat experience make him a steadying presence and often the first to engage physically dangerous opponents. The council’s triumph over the academy’s secret projects and power‑hungry groups relies on his reliability as much as his strength.
Key relationships define his arc. His unreciprocated love for Medaka is the central emotional thread; she consistently refuses his advances, yet he remains loyal and protective. His rivalry with Zenkichi is a constant source of friction, but underneath the jealousy there is a grudging respect, born of shared battles and a common dedication to Medaka. He connects with Mogana Kikaijima as a fellow special‑class student; they are often paired together and share the experience of being above average but not abnormal, which lends a subtle camaraderie. His connection to Nekomi Nabeshima, the judo club captain, is noteworthy. She despises natural genius, and he becomes a tool in her schemes when she arranges a match between him and Zenkichi. Although he loses, her report about his elegant handwriting leads to his recruitment into the student council.
Akune’s development from a thuggish destroyer into a composed, albeit still prideful, member of the academy’s leadership is one of steady reformation. The incident with Medaka ends his violence, and his time on the council continues to mellow his temper. In a glimpse of the future, ten years after the main events, he has become the owner of a successful toy company, delighting in crafting toys by hand. He is also married to his former classmate Wanizuka, and he takes pleasure in catching up with old friends, demonstrating that his competitiveness and intensity have mellowed into a contented adulthood.
Regarding notable abilities, Akune is a special, a classification meaning he is above ordinary humans but does not possess an outright abnormality on the level of a superpower. His most remarkable trait is a form of skill replication: he can copy the abilities of others by observation, though to a lesser extent than the original. This allows him to learn combat techniques quickly, adapt to different fighting styles, and hold his own against stronger opponents. Physically, he has superhuman speed, strength and durability, and his fighting skills are refined enough to give him the title Prince of Judo. His handwriting is also singled out as exceptionally beautiful, a detail that ends up defining his path into the council.
