Description
Najimi Ajimu, also known by the surname Anshin'in, is a central figure in Medaka Box Abnormal. She is the founder of Hakoniwa Academy and the architect of the Flask Plan, a scheme designed to cultivate perfect humans. Classified as a Not Equal and one of the Delayed Two alongside Hanten Shiranui, Ajimu possesses an incomprehensible number of distinct abilities, totaling over twelve quadrillion, comprising both Abnormalities and Minuses. Her signature ability, Multiple Skill User, allows her to wield any of these skills at will, granting her powers such as instant teleportation to any location via Alibi Lock, eternal life through Death Block, the nullification of others’ abilities with Live Zero, and the capacity to bestow or remove skills from others. She can also manipulate perception, disease, and even time and space, and she is effectively omniscient, though she deliberately refrains from using that awareness so as not to spoil the narrative.
Ajimu’s background stretches back over three trillion years, making her one of the oldest beings in the story. Five thousand years before the main events, she encountered Iihiko Shishime, the first person she could not defeat. In pursuit of a certain goal, she fought and lost against him at least one hundred million times, even with the aid of other Not Equals she had created. Eventually, she achieved her objective not by winning but by avoiding him entirely—a lesson that shaped her later approach to conflict. About one hundred years prior to the series, she shifted from a test tube plan to the Flask Plan, influenced by her experiences with Iihiko. Three years before the story begins, she appointed Misogi Kumagawa as president of the Hakobune Middle School student council and served as its vice-president. Kumagawa, troubled by the possibility that his affection for her was based solely on her appearance, viciously attacked her and ripped off her face. This act left her physically scarred and, according to her own words, made her nobody. Later, she was sealed by Kumagawa using the combined effects of All Fiction and Bookmaker, though she retains a prime version of herself in the dream world.
Personality-wise, Ajimu is enigmatic and cryptic, often speaking in riddles and revealing little about her true intentions. She displays a blend of sharp intelligence and whimsicality, frequently breaking the fourth wall to acknowledge her own existence as a fictional character in a manga. She knows the number of volumes released and that an anime adaptation exists. Despite her overwhelming power, she is not malicious or cruel for its own sake; rather, her motivations center on exploration, understanding, and the pursuit of challenges. She enjoys guiding others toward their goals and often encourages them to confront her, as seen when she tells Kumagawa that defeating her might be easier than he thinks. She acknowledges her own limitations in a meta sense, admitting that she cannot defeat Medaka Kurokami because Medaka is the protagonist of the story.
Her role in the narrative is multifaceted. She serves as both a protagonist and antagonist at different points, acting as the chief antagonist of the Kurokami Medaka’s Successor Arc. She provides crucial assistance to characters after their deaths, granting Zenkichi Hitoyoshi the Parasite Eye and returning Kumagawa’s first Minus in exchange for All Fiction. Her interactions with key figures are marked by complexity. With Kumagawa, their relationship encompasses rivalry, admiration, and emotional turmoil, shaping both their developments. Iihiko Shishime represents her greatest defeat and a catalyst for her philosophical shift toward avoidance. With Medaka, Ajimu acknowledges the protagonist’s inherent narrative immunity, creating a dynamic that highlights themes of confrontation versus avoidance. Development-wise, Ajimu evolves from a being who sought direct victory at any cost to one who understands the value of evasion and acceptance. Even after her sealing, she continues to exist in the dream world, periodically appearing to offer guidance or challenge others. Her final message to Medaka, revealed through the Hundred Flowers Run, is a simple request to play again sometime, underscoring her enduring, almost playful, nature. In summary, Najimi Ajimu is a character defined by immense power, deep self-awareness, and a paradoxical blend of detachment and engagement, whose long history and complex relationships drive much of the story’s philosophical undercurrents.
