TV-Series
Description
Clain is the central protagonist of the story, a fourteen-year-old boy who lives a solitary life on a remote边境 island. His existence is sustained by the widespread Fractale system, a technology that most of society depends upon for its daily needs and stability. Unlike many who grew up entirely within this system, Clain has a deep and enthusiastic interest in antiquated technology, such as old IT devices, early-model digital cameras, and cell phones, as well as a personal enjoyment of physical activities like riding bicycles.
In terms of personality, Clain is initially presented as a gentle and somewhat naive individual, often described as a mild-mannered or herbivorous boy. His isolated upbringing has left him without many real human connections, as his own parents interact with him only through doppelgangers, or Doppels, which are virtual avatars he can dismiss at will. This has made him seem passive or unassuming at the start of the journey, but he possesses a core of quiet determination. As the story progresses, he shows emotional resilience, quickly regaining his composure after witnessing violence and death, though he is also shown to be possessive and single-minded when it comes to protecting those he cares about. His perspective is that of an ordinary person caught between two extreme factions, and he is often more concerned with the immediate safety of his friends than with the grand political or ideological struggles of the world.
Clain’s primary motivation stems from a chance encounter with a mysterious girl named Phryne, who is fleeing from pursuers. After taking her in and tending to her wounds, he becomes captivated by her. When she vanishes the next morning, leaving behind only a brooch, Clain finds himself with a new purpose: to find her again. The brooch releases Nessa, a cheerful and energetic Doppel who looks like a younger version of Phryne, and Clain agrees to accompany her on the journey. His initial goal to simply find Phryne deepens as he uncovers the dark secrets of the Fractale system and the Temple that controls it, forcing him to confront the corrupt reality of the world he lives in and his own beliefs about it.
His role in the story is that of the protagonist whose life is upended by the arrival of Phryne, pulling him from his quiet, isolated existence into the center of a conflict between the Temple and the rebel group known as Lost Millennium. He acts as the anchor for the central trio, which includes the world-weary Phryne and the innocent Nessa. While he lacks any special training or allegiance to either faction, his unique perspective as an outsider and his growing resolve make him a key catalyst for the events that unfold. He often finds himself trying to protect both girls from the various dangers they face, even when his efforts are not always successful.
Clain’s key relationships are the driving force of his development. His relationship with Phryne is one of growing affection and a desire to save her from her tragic past and the horrific intentions of the Temple. He sees past her trauma and self-loathing to recognize her inner beauty, and he eventually confesses his love for her. His relationship with Nessa is initially that of a reluctant traveling companion, as he finds her boundless energy exhausting. However, he grows to deeply care for her, appreciating her joyful spirit and her invaluable aid. The bond between the three of them forms the emotional heart of the story. He also interacts with members of Lost Millennium, such as the gruff but good-hearted Sunda and the accusatory Enri. While he comes to see them as friends, he never fully endorses their violent methods, recognizing them as murderers even as he allies with them.
Clain undergoes significant character development throughout the narrative. He begins as a passive boy content to live in a comfortable but artificial world, interacting with virtual copies of his family. Through his journey, he is forced to confront the brutal reality of his world, including the willingness of the Temple to conduct horrific human experiments and the ruthless tactics of the rebels. He moves from being a passive observer to an active participant, risking his own life multiple times to save Phryne and Nessa. He learns to stand up for what he believes in, moving beyond his initial naivete to make mature choices, such as allowing Phryne and Nessa to go through with the system reboot despite his personal fear of losing them. By the end, he has grown into a more decisive and courageous young man, culminating in him confessing his love to Phryne.
Clain possesses a unique and notable ability that sets him apart from other people: he is able to see Doppels, the virtual avatars used by almost everyone, without needing to wear any special glasses or equipment. This inherent capability is unusual and hints at a deeper connection to the workings of the Fractale system. Beyond this, his primary assets are his knowledge of and affinity for old-world technology, which becomes useful at several points in his journey, and his own personal resolve which grows stronger with each challenge he faces. His fate at the end of the story is to be reunited with Phryne after a year of her being asleep, where she awakens with her own memories and Nessa's personality merged with her own, allowing the trio to finally find peace together.
