Description
Access is an angelic being who serves as the partner and guide to Kaito Sinbad, the rival phantom thief in Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne. Initially perceived by the heroine, Maron Kusakabe, and her own angel companion Finn Fish as a demon working for the forces of evil, Access's true nature is considerably more complex and benevolent than this early assessment suggests. He is a resident of Paradise who was dispatched by a divine authority, tasked with a mission that ultimately aligns with protecting the reincarnation of Jeanne d'Arc. Unlike the purely innocent and childlike demeanor of Finn Fish, Access is characterized by a confident, cheerful, and energetic personality. He often refers to himself with the honorific "-sama," a habit that reflects his high self-regard and a touch of playful vanity, though this is tempered by his generally easygoing and supportive nature. His most defining personal trait is his deep, unwavering, and often comically unrequited love for Finn Fish. He openly adores her, his face frequently turning red in her presence, and despite being consistently rejected, he remains devoted, believing that the pain of rejection is preferable to losing her to someone else. This devotion speaks to a sensitive and loyal heart beneath his flamboyant exterior.

Access's role in the story is multifaceted, extending beyond that of a simple supporting character. Functionally, he is essential to Kaito Sinbad, the alter ego of Chiaki Nagoya. Access provides Chiaki with the power to transform into his phantom thief form and is instrumental in their shared mission to seal demons that possess works of art, converting the defeated demons into black chess pieces. He acts as a confidant and advisor to Chiaki, offering guidance on matters of the heart and their mission, demonstrating a level head and the ability to make quick decisions in desperate situations. For much of the early narrative, Access is framed as an antagonist, as the demons he and Sinbad collect are believed to be gathered for the Devil. However, his true role is later revealed to be that of a protector. He was aware of Finn Fish's hidden loyalties and her ultimate betrayal of Maron, and he was sent to watch over and safeguard her. Unable to do this alone, he selected Chiaki to be his human partner and bestowed upon him the power to become Sinbad, directly opposing Finn's plans. This makes him a secret guardian, working from the shadows to counter a threat that the heroine herself does not yet understand.

The central relationship in Access's existence is his poignant and one-sided romance with Finn Fish. Their history predates the events of the series, having known each other in Paradise, where Access's affections first developed. This dynamic creates a significant amount of tension and humor, as Access's obvious advances are perpetually snubbed by the seemingly uninterested Finn. Despite this, his feelings are genuine and profound. In a notable demonstration of his character, Access once used a magical flower called Saint Lovers to make Finn fall in love with him. However, he soon realized that her enchanted affection was not the real love he desired, and he chose to undo the spell, accepting her renewed rejection in order to preserve her free will. This act reveals a deep respect for her autonomy and a desire for authentic connection, even at the cost of his own happiness. This love is not just a source of comedy but a driving force that fuels his loyalty and his determination to ultimately save Finn from her own tragic circumstances. Access also shares a strong, trusting, and platonic bond with Chiaki, acting as a reliable partner who can be counted on without fail.

Over the course of the narrative, Access undergoes a significant development in the eyes of both the characters and the audience. He evolves from being perceived as a demonic antagonist to a crucial ally with a noble purpose. His true allegiance to the side of good is confirmed when it is revealed he was sent by God, and his mission has always been to protect Maron from Finn's deception. This revelation recontextualizes all of his previous actions, transforming him from a rival's tool into a selfless guardian. In terms of his personal arc, his unwavering love for Finn is eventually rewarded. After the final battles conclude and the ultimate evil is defeated, Access and Finn are reincarnated as human beings. They are reborn as Shinji and Natsuki, the children of the now-married Maron and Chiaki, allowing their eternal bond to finally be realized in a peaceful, mortal life.

As an angel, Access possesses a number of notable supernatural abilities. He has the power to transform Chiaki into Kaito Sinbad, using the jewel on his forehead as a conduit for this magic. He can manifest a pair of distinctive black wings, which allow him to fly and are a visual marker of his angelic status. While these dark wings initially lead Jeanne to believe he is an evil being, they are not an indicator of malevolence but rather of his rank and lesser power compared to higher angels. Access is also capable of collecting and containing the defeated demons, converting them into physical chess pieces. Furthermore, he possesses a keen awareness and information-gathering ability, often being the first to detect the location of a demon and alerting Chiaki immediately, making him an ideal partner for a phantom thief. His appearance is distinctive, featuring long purple hair that he sometimes wears in a ponytail, large expressive eyes, elf-like pointed ears, and a single pointed tooth that adds to his charmingly roguish look.
